Not spliced but I have fed a new length of filament in part way through a print a few times and all were successful

Discussing with laddo here the need for monitoring the temperature in the printer enclosure he's come up with this. Lashed together and fag packet sketches but it all works.
He's got a Raspberry Pi running Rasbian. Then some sort of breakout board fed by multiple DS18B20, 1-wire programmable temperature sensors.
He's then written some "code". The Pi sends the data over the home network.
His ad hoc GUI is a cube drawn freehand in Paint to represent the printer. Can be any JPEG or PNG (even I think a live video link say from a camera watching the printer).
He's going to draw up something in CAD to make it look like a professional job. The temperature windows can be moved around to represent where they are on the actual printer.
He's working now on having critical alarms in case one area goes over temp...the temperature will flash red or something!
I don't profess to have much of a clue, if any of how it works but is does!

Nice one
those one wire sensors are the nuts. I've got my house wired up with them to control the underfloor heating zones via a several raspberry pi. They sensors are individually addressable and unlike thermistors, you don't have to worry about noise or cables affecting the readings, and about a quid a piece

That's brilliant, I particularly like the UI.
You could also look at Octopi which has plugins for monitoring enclosures as well as streaming cameras etc...

I hope it's all written down and simple to understand for when you snuff it! Joking aside this was discussed on another forum, the downside of custom HA for ongoing users if it's the legacy of someone who's passed on. I know a guy, ex Scrapheap Challenge expert, who installed his own then ripped a lot out and fitted proprietary stats for that very reason.
Not that that will stop us doing it!
Why do you have a number of Pi's? Redundancy? Is there a limit to how many DS18B20s you can have on one Pi? Do too many on one slow things down? (Monkey see, monkey do, me).
As above I know jack about this sort of stuff. I tried looking at my lad's code, might as well have been in Swahili!

I've documented it all including building the pi OS etc. I've written it all in Python and my daughters are beginning to get good at that, I bought them a pi each a couple of years ago with an experimental kit so they could make things. So I'm hoping it will persist, plus once its all complete, I'll probably share the project on github etc.
Each pi has one one wire bus that can be enabled by loading the correct drivers. The number of OW sensors depends on cabling, they are not passive, they need power but I've heard of people with 20+ on one bus if they need a lot of sensors in one place. I don't put more than one on a bus unless its an awkward place to cable. Instead I install a small pi "shield" (daughter board in old money) from sheepwalk electronics. This gives 8 individual one wire buses. I started off using the structured cabling that I installed when I renovated the house 20 years ago. But this doesn't go to bathroom, ensuite, utility etc. So I tend to stick a pi with a shield in strategic locations to make cabling easier. The kids/missus/cleaner tend to pull out the cables with the one wire sensors when using structured cabling so I'm replacing this with hard wired via the old alarm cabling that I also flooded the house with.
So I have a pi with shield up in the cupboard in the old barn part of the house, this has the underfloor heating manifold in it too. This cupboard backs onto a bathroom and bedroom an makes it easy to cable sensors to 4 underfloor heating zones. I have another two under the stairs where there's controls to about 12 zones, including the small upstairs manifold, and I have another in my office that takes temps from the workshop and will be doing the outbuilding too.
These are all pi 2B so not spendy and I've had them for years. The controllers are 2 pi4 with sata SSD drives.
The one wire kit is easy to configure. Once you have installed the driver and the one wire tools you can issue a one wire directory commend on the pi like this, the top 5 lines are the sensors on that pi

but if you add the tools to the controlling pi, even though they don't have any one wire sensors, you can configure the tools to show you all the sensors from all the pi with shields in one command

so getting the temp now is simple, the workshop is on frost/condensation settings at the moment so I keep it between 5.5 and 6.5c, the below is just before the heating kicked in. I'm changing this to be 6 to 8c, I've been seeing if I can save fuel. If I want to work in the workshop I can override this and turn on the fan coil units and its toasty warm in about 10 mins.

However this is just for checking its working, there are one wire python tools so I can do all this much easier. I also use python influxdb tools and poll all the sensors every 10 minutes. Influxdb is a time series database. This database is used by Grafana to make pretty graphs like this. You can see where the heating is cutting in and out. This isn't the HA I'm using in the house, its an IP relay with built in temp inputs, unfortunately they are thermistor bases so PITA,. The graph is via one wire sensors though.
The house temps are done in a similar fashion. I'm still messing about with the heating controls and manifolds as I migrate away from the carp system that came with the underfloor heating, should all be migrated next week. The new system stores all the desired temperatures in Redis. This is a memory resident database often used for caching in web applications. The beauty is that it doesn't write to disk much so doesn't trash you pi SD card. I've added SSDs to the controlling pi (I have two, one standby) for the influxdb and graphing part. Every 15 minutes the heating controls polls each sensor, compares the temp with the setting in Redis for that time of day and adds some hysteresis then decides whether to send a message to the IP relay to turn it on or off and. There's an IP relay for each underfloor heating zone actuator.

The parts have not been checked well though, the engine block is too large for the bay and there is no information about how to attach the wheels. I have used a piece of wire as the axles are tubular. Chassis, body and wheels have been printed so far and I am just doing the upholstery in red silk.

PLA can be painted.
B&m sell a good aerosol primer, made by "turner and gray", then the Range do a rangeof acrylic paints by "art studio" which are £1 a bottle.
Prime.
Paint with metallic gold.(NOT brass! It's too red).
Then a "wash" of watered down black.(with a bit of green in maybe?)
Or: there's a product called "rub n buff" - I've never used it, but it's well regarded in the 3dprint painting groups I frequent.
