Thats not how it works with modern engines, you can't actually 'run out' of fuel, the engine management forces a misfire as a warning then shuts off the injectors, keeping the HP fuel pump 'wet' and therefore lubricated. A misfuel (petrol into a diesel) will cause damage to the HP pump and injectors, but not running critically low on the right fuel.

local dealer has just swapped out eight of them once due to the hp pump not pumping and the brain not shutting things off second set they thought the pump was faulty and sapped it out too then it turns out it was the ecu not delivering the right info , either way the new injectors arrive pre primed but if they dont get the new fuel supply in the two or three seconds the new injectors turn them selves into old injectors , ,,, granted its an older machine ,, about three months old now . I cant write the rest on an open forum but Ill be sticking with older stuff for the foreseeable future.

Interesting, sounds like a fuel level sensor issue if the HP pump has run dry. I'm still 'in the loop' on JLR stuff, despite working for a Merc. dealer and I've not seen anything on special service announcements about it so it's probably not an emerging concern - yet...

Im hearing some crazy stuff at the moment , , Personally I will never own a common rail diesel at all ever ,,, ever ever ever ,,, but lots of that comes from being round them from the start and the learning curve was steep , they do seem to have a lot of the issues sorted out now , but the days of a 123 doing half a million miles as a taxi seems like the stuff of legends and myths . long life service schedules , sealed for life diffs etc and common rail make me glad I like the old stuff . I like having a dipstick too , gods I must be getting old.

Well, CRD is a well matured technology now, yep, you get problems but you do with sequential too - remember the Stanadyne injectors in Transits in the 80's?
I must admit, I like the new stuff - it keeps me busy if nothing else.

I've just sold my 6 year old car and put my old ssangyong korando back on the road. It's 22 years old and has a Mercedes 5 cylinder diesel engine with a Bosch inline injector pump and no electronics.

Ha ha! If you think that's confusing my Surf has a beeper when you select reverse but it's not got any sensors it just beeps!

My Discovery 2 supposedly had rear parking sensors but it's beeping bore no relation to how close or far away you were from an obstacle

Indirect OM602 with a Bosch PES pump. Really can't got too wrong this set up - inline pumps do leak fuel sometimes.

Later 2.9 OM602's had Bosch VE rotary distributor injection pump with electronic control and direct injection.

I don't get that attitude... 2006 Renault Laguna 1.9dci. I owned it from 1 year old, took it from 16k to 320k miles in 10 years. needed nothing but regular servicing, the odd ball joint, tyres, brakes and a clutch. and that's a reportedly 'unreliable' car.

My last Polo needed you to be able to play the overture to Wagner’s Tannhauser on the indicator and light switches to reset the service light

Our 2003 Berlingo you just press the trip reset button then switch the ignition on and it counts the service miles down and resets.
