Thieving scum

Son is a heavy plant mechanic. Doesn’t get paid a lot, so has to save up to buy tools. We’ve helped him out at times too. He’s got 4K worth of tools, well had. Some scumbag has been robbing his tool box, 1k worth of tools gone. Others have had stuff go too. He’s gutted, I’m furious. CCTV is now being installed in the workshop, a bit late but nothing like this has happened before. Rant over

If the security of the workshop is the employers responsibility, then if anything goes missing they should be involving the Police and their insurers.

I seen a "General op" get flattened by a bar when he was caught on the lift where i served my time. He had an ebay page doing great trade with other peoples belongings. I don't bring tools into a job anymore, its the managements duty to supply them imho.

Depends on the job, workshop vehicle techs generally have it in their job spec., ours are 'insured' by the company provided the boxes are chained to the floor and we have provided photo's / video of our kit.

When a co-workers father retired she asked me it I wanted his tools which I gratefully accepted. They were all good quality brands - and each had the owners initials stamped on. Maybe worth investing is an engraving tool (Aldi or Lidl have them on offer) or a set of stamps ?

When I was an apprentice our workshop got burgled twice, both times the company paid up; we had to submit a list of what was missing, they called in the Snap-On man who replaced the lot, irrespective of the original make.

Thinking about getting one of those tile things for tracking, hiding it in a tool roll or somehow on a power tool

Losing tools used to really p**s me off, the more so as it had to be other employees who were responsible. When I was "hands on" in a workshop environment, having my initials engraved on every one of my tools did seem to greatly reduce the number that disappeared. And of course locking my toolbox at teabreak or any time I was going to be away from my bench and head in a piece of equipment for a more than a few minutes.

I remember doing some IT work in the old Ford factory in Swansea.
Everything had to be locked up each evening.
I asked what on Earth for? Because the workers would steal anything they fancied. Yes off their own employer and even other workers. I asked about security - they said they could do nothing or the unions would organise a strike.

Ive posted it before ,,, but in Africa on site , anyone caught stealing tools gets a very very severe beating , its looked on as taking food from the moths of the tool owners wife and children , very very few tools go missing.

Bet you have some free tools with an arrow stamped on them.
