Seems it was a sustained, targeted scam but the official response was not great

In my opinion, based on what I have seen, the buyer of the house is the victim, and sadly has no claim to the property

The original owner should be restored and the land registry updated, he could do with changing his passwords as well

What do you expect from an under resourced and over work Police force. They'd rather nick somebody for a slightly ****phobic comment - as they can get a quick conviction and improve there clear up rate - than spend a long time investigating and getting no conviction.

A quick "visit" to his office the next morning sorted it all out

It's not an entirely new scam, but the usual one is for them to remortgage a house that they don't own.

This happens with land all the time, landowners that disappear off abroad for extended periods are prime targets.

Heard the case on the radio (Moneybox I think) and 2 things struck me, 1st, the conveyancing solicitor was responsible for the identity confirmation of the seller, how much effort did the solicitor put into this? When I sold my cottage I used a solicitor in Stoke (I live in West Wales) and don't remember much effort being put into ensuring I was who I claimed to be.
2nd There have been cases of small business WiFi networks being hacked and email compromised to the extent that funds are being diverted into criminal accounts.
All this falls to 'Action Fraud' not the local police force from what I can see all they do is act as a register of the fraud investigation is minimal. In my view I think they and the banks have a lot to answer for.

Who are only interested in gathering data for politically correct purposes. Very little information requested about the crime, but you will be there for hours answering all of their "diversity" questions.

I was once involved in a case (only on student placement mind!) where an entire block of apartments had been sold as individual freeholds through the same conveyancer but were in fact (you guessed it) leaseholds. That’s a fairly catastrophic error really! The conveyancer blamed the mistake on confusion around commonhold which was fairly new at the time (and probably would have been the appropriate option should there have actually been one!). I bet their PI insurer was well pleased!

Surely the person who bought the house must be considered "guilty" if the house was not actually put up "For Sale" and did not receive any proof from the person who sold it to him that he actually owned it!

Ive seen loads of TV series about the Police seizing these scrotes assets (assumes they ever catch them) & selling them at auction.
What I dont understand is why do the recovered assets go to the Treasury & not the victims. I understand the investigations cost money (but the ratepayers surely pay those) & I know they sometimes give money to local charities but surely the victims deserve something of recovered assets.

With what ive understood of this all from my personal experience a bent solicitor, a bent financial person / mortgage advisor, and a bent client are required to pull this off

Its not a five second opportunistic act. Its all carefully planned and orchestrated
