This is thick board (MDF/Masonite) so limited length. They are overlapped in both directions. They used this method in mid 70's.

Fire up the coffee and queue the music.
Scrap metal in the form of some old bed spanners was cut and filled to fit.
Then brazed in to place and polished up
should have bought two !

Sometimes life throws you a nice challenge.
A family friend is working in a house in Bath, where some original fixings and features are still in place. He found out he needed a moulding plane to cut replacement MDF for the wooden door surrounds. He couldn't find a router bit or any one willing to do the small amount of work, 30 feet, for a price that did not require an arm or a leg.
In one of the planes I was recently given had a profile close enough to pass. The plan is to remove the lot and fit the old in the main rooms and in areas where it is hard to see fix the new MDF.
Here it is, tired, dirty, blunt and a rubbing strip was missing.
Again a replacement rubbing strip was salvaged from a dead plane. The table saw was the only power tool used.
Here the new wood is glued into place and being planed to size.
The bent bit of wood, LHS is only there to prevent damage from the vice jaws.
When the wood was to size a cabinet scrapper was used to give the final finish.

The wood was sealed with a clear sanding sealer, then 5 coats of French polish. Then 8 coats of wax.

That is a optical illusion. The hole is still round and no wear. It was a bugger to get the post out. Heat. oil, hammer and a Oh bugger moment.
The whole lot now is de-rusting

Today I have [partially] fixed my hydraulic press. Managed to remove the cylinder from the top beam which I had removed yesterday, the lower plate was being prevented from unthreading by the bend in the beam. BFH sorted that.....

I've decided that, rather than trying to straighten the beam ^, I'll make a replacement which I'll ensure is strengthened appropriately

I already have enough of the beam left from the original build so that's a stroke of good luck. I've just ordered a Starrett hole saw of the size I'll need, so progress is being made.
[Can't recall how I drilled the original but it's pretty rough, probably used the biggest cutter I had and chewed the rest....

Nah, if I need to work on something higher, I'll borrow the use of the 20-ton one at my local garage. This one is plenty tall enough for anything I'll need.

That thing when you start using a new Chinese tool and end up rebuilding it in the first hour as it self destructs.
Pivot shaft should have had a circlip. Replaced with an M8 bolt for now.
M3 tool lasted one rivnut.
Found a stainless M3 bolt the right size.
Drilled out old thread on lathe.
Silver soldered new bolt in
Finally get to do the job I wanted to do!

not technically fixed but tested, dismantled, loaded, drove 100 miles, then unloaded a 4 post lift, 3.5T capacity with centre cross lift. Have a lot of expensive car / van bills coming up, and I've been humming and haaaaaing for a good while now whether I could justify one or not, but when I was getting quotes just for the van repairs at 1200 euros for work I can do myself with a lift... sod it, decided the time was right to go for one. Found this one for 750 euros, not too far away. Had a decent day out with a mate, my van and flatbed trailer...
now just got to pour a new foundation, 4.5m3 of concrete, and rebuild it in place, pull in a new cable / air line to it and recommission it.... will be far easier building it here than taking it apart, at least I can get in with the front loader forks on the tractor, so will be able to lift the ramps directly into place, the rest are manhandlable so not too difficult.....
Reckon it should pay for itself pretty quickly, as a fair bit of work coming up, this will be so much easier on the knees and back... already had the mates asking when will it be finished so they can borrow it.......... as soon as you come round and give me a hand with the concrete... hahah..
Hopefully next weekend will be able to dig the foundations out, and shutter it, then the following weekend be able to pour.. then wait til it hardens fully (28 days they recommend?).. hopefully, end of Nov should be operational... maybe, hopefully etc...
