Little job done today, an ash pan and grid for a built in barbecue, just mild steel cos that's all they wanted to pay for, the mesh is stainless though,

Today I knoocked this thing up from two 17mm sockets. The working end is machied from an impact socket the back end just a normal bog standard one welded on for extra length.

Been meaning to make one for ages. Anyone guess what it's for?

Today I successfully produced three bits of scrap!



Screwdriver bit for scale. The top one is the original and the three below are scrap.

I made the schoolboy error of not double checking the size of cutter I should be using, I could have sworn I had put 2mm in the CAD but turns out it was 3mm after all. Ho Hum, try again tomorrow it seems.

EDIT: The material is annealed CD70 spring steel, it is bloody hard stuff.

Today I made a little tray for my new wireless keyboard. The old keyboard has served me well but it is starting to produce gremlins so I have bought a wireless Microsoft thing. Looks and feels quality actually so then I made a little tray for it and fastened some magnets to it. I can stick it out of the way anywhere in the workshop:





Now all I need do is finish the new controller (yes, still on with it).

Another good guess but no.

I'm not one for dragging out the suspense so I'll tell you. It's a tool for undoing security couplers on metal fence panels.

Most of the ones we use have a 7/16BSW nut same as scaffold clips (as Dave-Sparks guessed). Putting the panels up is a PITA though especially if the ground is not very flat and level you end up fighting with two panel ends, a 3-part clip and a wobble-ended box spanner. I make the tool for putting them up with a battery powered nut gun by welding a 21mm socket onto another socket (you need the extra length because otherwise the thread pushes the socket off the nut).

Nowadays you get a lot of the security type to stop people putting their hand through the wires and un-doing the clamp with a spanner from the outside. They sell you a 3-pronged spanner end that's really poxy and prone to breaking off the prongs. This tool should allow me to remove and re-fit the panels quickly with the nut gun and unlike the proper tool it's very unlikely to snap off a prong.

3rd day this week Ive lost my safety glasses, looked everywhere.

Rigged up the lathe extraction. This little fan shifts plenty of air with a bit of pressure.

32mm pipe. 35-37mm hole through wall. Could use ideas how to finish the outside.

Painted the shed celing and walls. Get a lot of midges and small flies in shed. Hard to see where to swat when its dirty!

word is that prices will drop late next summer (12-15 months)

theres a reclamation yard near here that do (rough as fk) 8x4 sheets for a tenner apiece, still. gaffer was saying price is likely to hit 20 a sheet; but lots of new sites starting up (they use the 8x4 sheets as fencing, so when theyre stripped down they end up piled up in the yard) on jobs due to finish august time next year

I was hoping to do it this year as condensation in there is awful in the colder months!

Made a truck tyre flat, ran over a nail in the yard which was sticking through a piece of broken pallet board.

Got to change it now.

Saturday I was doing lots of small jobs.

But I did find time to experiment with the charcoal paper bags from MIS to see how hot the could get.

First try was with scrap lead.


Still warm, you can see the rainbow colours on the "blobs."

Next try was with scrap alloy. But done with a mix of coke and charcoal.




Not my best sand casting. But The sand was to wet.

Not finished yet, bonnet & front grill to do. Louvers for side, may have to buy a fly press and tooling
The calculation for crank seem out as well. Pedal travel to long for short legs, redicing crank throw will sort that but brings other problems
