They’re ridiculous, I’ve been overtaken by them plenty and they bloody shift
complete opposite here.... scooters everywhere ....adults on pavements off to work... completely ignored. Ebikes on the other hand are stopped every 5 minutes. Looking for a road legal tag and check its only peddle assist and not switched apparently. Guess it depends on the local force....Don't think the old bill are too bothered about electric bikes and if they're over powered, they seem to be focussing on the electric scooters and confiscating those. No doubt having a load of fun on them down the nick car park

The thing is its being sensible which is the key...i want mine for a bit of green lane riding or a coastal route combined with a bit of "van life"...running around the local shopping precinct at 30mph while wearing a hoodie is asking for trouble and i totally agree

Did an organised trial today on private land with no public access or footpaths and the police were there within 10 minutes of it starting responding to a call of an "off road motorbike in the woods". Wish they were that quick to respond when I had 2 grands worth of kit knicked from the garage.well they have to fill there pocket books up somehow

Would have been obvious a trial was on. Surely the Clark would have advised local residents.
A lot of Mx tracks have been lost over the years.
People move into a house locally then proceed to complain constantly about the noise until closure is forced

There aren't any local residents to inform! Basically some people like walking and silence, and think everyone else should only walk and be silent too! A lot of local green lanes (BOATs) have been closed due to this. About 2% of the total network are byways open to all traffic, including walkers, but some are not happy with 100% access they are only happy if they can have access to 100% AND stop a motorbike accessing 2% of the network.

Anyone who complains about how others live without harming others or what they do for enjoyment should be considered slightly insane and not in control of there actions...We have been getting brain washed for the last 5 years or more that the combustion engine is killing the planet and us, We take it upon ourselves to start using electric bikes and instantly start getting persecuted for it.

Riding on footpaths is illegal, full stop. Permitted mobility vehicles are restricted to 4/8 MPH.

Everything posted on this thread this far is definitely illegal to ride on the roads as an *ebike* (i.e, with the same vehicle and licensing requirements as a bike). @roofman if you want to stay within the law, try out a commercial, legitimate ebike. It will shift you around. They're pretty good.
That out of the way, the motor is only one component on the drive train. Think of its rating rather than anything to do with speed or power as a marker of longevity and weight. What gives you the speed and power is the battery and controller. A "250W" motor can see 500W but it will get hotter and won't last as long.
Other thing to consider is what you want the power for, is it just to cruise along? You want a high top speed? Do you want to bother pedalling? All of this means you have to consider both the gearing of the bike, battery voltage and the motor (motors can be geared but are also wired for a nominal speed.) If you want a fast road bike where you still want your pedalling to do some work, a mountain bike is going to be useless as unless you change the front chainring, your legs will be whizzing around and you'll only be doing 20mph. Likewise, if you've got a motor that's wired to top the back wheel out at 15mph (at whatever voltage your battery is - increasing voltage will increase speed), even if it's "1000W" and you've a controller that's capable of dumping the required power down, it'll get you there pretty smartish but its max is its max.
All that aside, you can bung any old bits together and they'll probably produce a working thing that's pretty fun.

It doesn't stop many people from doing it. I think it is fair for people who are at danger in fast moving traffic to use a path but they must be slow enough to be on a pathway. I ride on the road, but I would not force it upon small children to do so.
Also where the cycle paths are the same colour as the foot path and there is no hard and fast rule as to if they are the inner or outer path, I have seen arrogant cyclists nearly run over women with pushchairs and children and hurl abuse at them for having to slow down. Sounds familiar of cars and cyclists. Thats not on so paths should have speed limits.
The world is a changing place, there are more cars on roads than when rules about bikes on paths were made.
I think the speed limit you mention would be best applied to bikes on paths where pedestrians are present too whether it is a foot path or a cycle path. Also it should be sign posted so.
I saw a woman only yesterday trying to navigate a busy roundabout on a bike, it was her right of way but it was as if she wasn't there, frightening, all I could think was get on the pavement.

A scary sight i am sure. Roundabouts are a prime example of changes to driving, no one drives around a roundabout as I was taught in my lessons and test. Each roundabout has its own set of rules and signage these days so you cannot even navigate them via the instructions of the old highway code.

Me being rather hefty and with our hills around here you would need 1000W just to get to the top
