decline in hedgehogs

there was a stall giving away pictures and stuff in the high street for wildlife charity mainly hedgehogs . aparently there 40 percent down this year .i give em a fiver and said i hadnt seen any this year .sod me on the way home was one that had been run over

Only ones i ever see now are flat ones

This week seems to be road kill apocalypse.

It's tragic.

I've been having major internal monologues with my self whether keeping hedgehogs in a pen, is morally correct, but I am sure if I release them here they'll become road pancakes.

I've had Sonic and Herrison Ford for 18 months here, they're lovely, but I do feel I'm imprisoning them and they should be free.

Seen three or four dead ones this year. I always stop to check if they’re alive or dead. Every time I find them they seem to have only just been killed which is so sad.

Yeah, it's foreseen, glad you've not seen any roadkill hog related.

There was a roadkill snack platter, between me and five miles to work.

Hogs, stoat / weasel things, and unidentified road kill.

Not surprised people don't see em when most people live right on top of each other.

The two regular ones here are doing well.

More so now as neighbor two doors down has opened her compost stack and the worms are easy to get to.

I am out in the sticks but have seen perhaps 1 in the last 5 years. I've got an "unkept" wildlife bit in the back garden and a shallow tray sunk in to the ground which I fill with water and all I ever see are.....bloody wood pigeons .

even in our hot place we have Hedgehogs to my surprice.....
the local A Holes seem to enjoy aiming their pick up's at em....
often there a line of flatties.....
Our dogs find em and no they dont harrass em either.....
we put water trays down where we know they travel, even made a couple of tiny water troughs that get filled when we use the irrigation system....
would put food out but we are overrun with stoats etc....no foxes here.....

We get a lot up here but a lot of flat ones also. I have heard / read that they are making a condition of these new build breeding-pen estates that the developers have to put hedgehog friendly fences in so they can roam between gardens. Apparently a lot of the decline is due to their routes being cut off and they get confused.

Not sure how much that is a factor but it sounds plausible

I saw a huge one in my front garden two days in a row, last week, but i also saw 3 dead ones on the roads in the same week.

I have a home made hog house in the ‘wilding patch’ of my garden, and I noticed last week that something has been in there and moved all the straw into the ‘bedroom’ area. I opened the lid for a sneak peek.

I always leave a cat bowl of water out for any hogs or other critters, and another full of water and pebbles, for bees to drink from.

There’s never any sign of hog dung in my yard, but my neighbour complained a few days ago that she is seeing it in hers a lot. She definitely doesn’t like hedgehogs.
