@Dr.Al Steel doesn't move as much as timber, and as its welded not screwed or bolted it doesn't matter. On timber it wants to be in compression (how you thought it should be) so you're not relying on the fixings alone to prevent sag.

Skimmed some normal hauler plates.

Then I got in some big ones, they are 450mm dia, 60mm thick and bleeding heavy
Had to machine some soft jaws for them then got one loaded into the lathe and clocked true then measured so that I could write the code.
Did a first skim pass to see if the code looked to be right and it seems to be. I will do the rest tomorrow.

Hello, no it's not my entry to the Red Bull Soapbox Challenge.

Yeah we seem to have done better up here for a change, last 3 mornings have been damp and been after 1 before we got going. Hopefully a decent couple of days now to get baling completed.

Decent crop? Straw prices seem silly still, dad bought a whole rigid load rather than the usual half load just to make sure he got some after last year's shortage. Thankfully last year they had enough from the previous to make do, had half a bale left at the end of lambing which did the orphaned/pet lambs till they went out.

Decent crop? Straw prices seem silly still, dad bought a whole rigid load rather than the usual half load just to make sure he got some after last year's shortage. Thankfully last year they had enough from the previous to make do, had half a bale left at the end of lambing which did the orphaned/pet lambs till they went out.

The grain is about 5% better than our average, less variation from good to bad fields though this year. Straw is a really big crop, 25% bigger than average, almost double the crop of last year, round here most people are saying the same.

That's to give myself room for the header, when your in the angled rows once the strip of crop gets to narrow there isn't enough space between the 2 rows of straw to get the header down so on the previous pass hold over then swing in once it's narrow enough to catch it all and it leaves a bit wide enough for the header.

These gates were reversed into,tearing the bolts from the concrete and minor gate repairs needed,I chiselled out under the post and grouted new bolts in,avoiding the rebar and mesh,then left it all to harden for 2 weeks.

First pass done, not so much wear on this one and it is more even.

All done.

Both plates dried and oiled for storage, 6" calipers for scale..

Next to clean the lathe before the cast iron sets like stone.

Cleaned up and hard jaws back so time for food

What actually wears on those hauler plates Robin? is it a taper so the rope grips in, and I guess the narrow bit wears until the ropes don't grip any more?

Yes the rope wears them, the ropes are obviously wet but also particles of mud/sand so it makes for a very abrasive rope and there lots of rope hauled over them in a day. 10-12 fathom between each creel and 20-25 creels per fleet, then probably 50 fathom of ends and probably 20 fleets a day. So in all about 1.5 miles of rope a day if my quick calcs are right.

It just suddenly clicked what you mean in your posts when you talk about a knife stripper on the hauler plates, I always wondered what that was for! For some reason i hadn't quite worked out how those things were supposed to move ropes, now i do! I bet it's a real swine when the ropes start slipping on the job, or fouling the stripper...
