Shapers have fallen victim to the 'gotta haveit's' thanks to youtube mania. The majority of them are parked up never to be used except as discussion pieces.

We had one in the Boughtons toolroom. It was used almost daily. I wonder if it got scrapped when they moved. I think you are correct, people see Abom and the like using them. I expect if I wait long enough, I would get one when they fall out of favour!!

Mine has sat in the corner of the worship, behind a toolbox, since I got it, never got around to commissioning it yet, don't really have a place to put it at the moment.

At least it's not a discussion piece ... because you can't see the damn thing.

I have to wonder when some literate genius starts handing out ' lines ' for spelling errors . I must learn to spell ... I must learn to spell... I must laern to spel. .. ( it's not working!!)

I was fortunate to acquire a small 7" shaper many years ago before I was able to afford a mill. Used it quite often, and for making fishing & dive weight mould blocks. After my Mother passed away, I found the meat tenderising hammer I made for her while clearing the house; made it in High School over fifty years ago, and refurbing the teeth will be the first project when I get the shaper up and running on a new stand. I cut the old stand off to save room in the shipping container for its trip half way across the world.

It wasn't meant as 'lines' it was tongue in cheek, pretty certain it was pedictive text etc. - I figured people didn't need spoonfeeding with emoticons

The tooling is the annoying thing. You can spend a big chunk on a machine tool, but then forever after you're piecing away buying tools here there and everywhere...

We still have an Omerod shaper in our workshop at work. It's simple and bulletproof, so everyone uses it for shaping keys to fit shafts/pulleys etc. Even the apprentices can't kill it. Sadly it falls foul of machinery guarding regs so its days are numbered...

but you can do both slots and splines on a lathe

if you used addons same with your spline cutting on the mill

I'm aware But those examples are clear to visualise
