I've tried a couple of types, 2% thoriated (still the best for steels in my opinion, 2% lanthanated is a good allrounder, Huntingdon multistrikes are also very good but a bit spendy really and CK Layzr. The Layzr is in my opinion better than the Lanthanated. It forms and holds a nicer "ball" for AC, strike up is very crisp and electrode erosion is very low so they last a good while so long as you're not constantly duffing the electrode into the puddle or filler.
Grind angles vary and the videos posted above cover it all off nicely. 2.4mm is a good simple choice if you want to keep costs down, you can grind it needle sharp for thin gauge material or blunt it down for higher amps/AC welding. I'd suggest either the 2% Lanth or Layzr.
For sharpening I used to use a 4 1/2 inch grinder and a flap wheel. Takes a while and destroys the flap wheel after a while but it does the job. I use as Dremel type tool now with diamond wheels, spinning the tungsten in the cordless drill and this gives a nice grind without any really deep grooves so the arc start is crisp and it doesn't wander.
Hope that helps
