That opportunity to reflect and grow up, thus becoming a good pupil, is denied to present-day children because corporal punishment, or even harsh criticism, is now mistakenly considered to be cruel. The reverse is true.I got the cane quite deservedly several times ,I guess I was a bit thicker than most
.
Apparently getting six of the best on the back side in front of the class is or was used to be known as " Knowledge imparted to the seat of all learning " for many .
It took me until I got six hearty wales from a size 14 black Plymsoll at the age of 13 yrs old for being out & out cheeky & stroppy before I calmed down then got on with learning & catching up with what I'd not learnt .
I didn't cry but by heck did my eyes water as I rigidly walked back to my desk at the back of the class , rigidly controlling my breathing and stature with all my pals & girlfriend looking aghast at me.
That night I did a lot of reflecting and growing up & became a very very good pupil , not quite making it to the top of the A stream in my final year aged 15 before joining HMF as an apprentice but being third instead .

Our headmaster was ex-borstal and dished out the cane constantly. It didn't stop kids from tar and feathering the deputy heads car or writing "The headmaster fxxxs like a donkey" in six foot high letters along the new sports hall wall the night before the grand opening!
someone broke in to the school well not broke in just left the window unlatched and walked in
