I need to have one fitted and have asked many companies for a price. Most of them were never heard of again, despite reminders so it is still outstanding. Verbal estimates without inspection ranged from £800 plus materials, through £5k is all in and a couple at £8k. One contractor after visiting and then going radio silent suggested £8-10k depending on whether or not we can find the 4" pipe that goes to the river from a road drain, right past the installation.
The only company that did quote wanted £14k to dig out the old installation and fit something I haven't been able to research. I would be happy with a TRI-Cell or WPL Diamond, both of which retail just above £2k.

Maybe it is me, but I think that over £10k for digging a hole and planting it is taking the Mickey? I could buy a mini digger and do the job myself if I were 20 years younger!

Any civils contractors on here that would like the job? I'm not looking for cheap, just good value for money and someone who does what they promise to do.

Have a look at the 10 pop Marsh units, if you installed it yourself you would have change out of 2k.

Yes, we have installed dozens of them and never had any issues. They comply with all LA regs.

i wired a couple up the other month for a guy who fits them there quite basic he had the old brick one in so moved the new tank over got the old one sucked out for 190 quid and filled it with rubble . i have the basic klargester tank on ours and that didnt need the pump when fitted but regs have changed

They really are simple things to install, a hole deep enough to accommodate the unit taking in to account inlet/outlet inverts, 6" of concrete in the bottom of the hole, lower it in while concrete is wet and put 50 gallons of water in it to add a bit of weight, let concrete set, fill unit with water and surround with pea shingle, connect pipes and fill to vent with shingle, connect and concrete cap. The rest is obvious.

I used a bio tank for my own place (for 16 people) and installed loads....The firm were based in Southampton......
very easy to fit...the tank and full kit was around 2.5 grand but that was 10 years ago....licienced for use in EU from Germany.....
I was fortunate enough to have my own digger.....the air pump (that never needed maint in 10 years) ran for 8xper day for 10 mins each time.....we had holiday makers hence the size.....they never need emptying but due to the sale of our house we had to have it done.... there was little shall we call it sludge in the bottom......
our discharged to a stream with no probs.....
BUT u def need a grease trap from the kitchen.....wifey always seperated the fat from cooking so we only cleaned the g/trap once per month.....

What I like about the marsh unit is its British made and compliant, you can tell from the quality of the layup the guys that make these things care about what they are doing. The company are also very accommodating when it comes to specials, I needed a monster of a water harvesting tank for a job and they made it/delivered it within six weeks.

ive had mine emptied twice in 20 years thats with the surface water going through it as well as the foul ,if just the foul goes through and not much detergent in it it rarely needs emptying if the bacteria is working properly. you can buy it to put in to start it away i think farmers used to shot a dead sheep in to start it off

That would not be a problem Bob, 4 bed house and only me and 'indoors bobbing around in it! We also have the Cheltenham caravan in the drive.

It didn't seem like the terrible job that they are making it out to be. I really would have done it myself and maybe I still might. However I suspect that we might be without service for longer than 'indoors will accept.

leave the existing tank where it is working if theres enough room to put the new one next to it or near by. fit the new one probably 2 days work get it prepared and ready and change over pipes the next day. that way its only off for a day . you will need an armoured cable over to feed the air pump there only a light load a piece of 2,5mm will be ok conected to a waterproof switchspur

If the concrete one is sound why change it? just add the smallest possible digester and treat the effulent outflow should then be able to discharge direct to a stream without any problem.

It isn't sound. The soakaway is choked because the output chamber of the tank is just a large hole. In addition, nanny has now made them illegal if within 50 metres of a waterway. We could spit into the River Severn, so at any point, EA could come along and condemn it. Then it would be more desperate than it is now.

Is there likely to be any issues with the proposed new unit with very low flows? Will the bugs die through lack of 'food'?

Is there any connection between above and what combination of rainwater, grey water and sewage you will put through it?

No, quite the reverse.

You are only allowed to put a maximum of 12% rainwater etc. Most of ours goes to ground rather than through the tank.
