The AA route planner

on line AA rout planner seem to be optimistic about time getting to place.
3hrs.40 minutes from Stockton tees to Dumbarton Glasgow.
I take it an average speed of 60 mph with no hold ups or stops.
what do you guys think.
would of thought it would take longer.

I always use Google maps for trip planning & your trip is coming out a little short of 5 hours. Think your AA planner is bit optimistic

AutoRoute reckons 3h 44m drivetime, when the driving speeds for various road types have been set to minimum in the AutoRoute Options. I find these settings are usually quite close for my driving style e.g. for trips from Cambridge to Oban. This assumes good traffic conditions, with no hold ups, plus things like a loo and coffee stop can easily add 20-30min to the total time. Waze estimates can vary widely, depending on the time the journey is set up, as they take account of existing hold ups en route.

As far as I know (and I haven't used it for a long time) the AA Route Planner doesn't take into account traffic conditions?? Google maps does - we use it all the time and it normally comes up about right when driving to the speed limit, unless, of course, something crops up while you are en route. If the latter happens then it tells you about it and corrects your arrival time accordingly.

Google Maps is currently giving 3h 39min as an estimate via the A69 and A74(M), 3h 47min via the A66 and A74(M), and 4h 21min via the A1 and around Edinburgh.

Yep that’s what I got, not too different from the AA

On Google maps, a 250 mile trip last night was 5min out despite loads of roadworks and sticking to the speed limits (just)

I use Apple Maps. I assume a 60mph average speed as opposed to their average. Works pretty well.

About three/four months ago had a day trip from here to maryport north of Whitehaven, Scottish Borders, pick up a tractor cab, back to look at a wheel in the back woods around Manchester, long slow crawl over the Peak District to pick up a couple of tractor wings and steps, back to near Evesham to see a DB expert for a chat and coffee, and home again.



Projected journey time was almost spot on despite huge overnight diversions on the M5 and lower part of the M6.

I have to say, there are better places to stay in that part of Scotland than Dumbarton .......

It's a good staging post and handy refuelling stop, if you're heading up north. Fuel starts to get a lot more expensive, especially north of Inverness.

Unless you are travelling on mostly motorways or clear a roads its very difficult to average more than 45 mph, no matter how hard you drive!
