I have to say, there are better places to stay in that part of Scotland than Dumbarton .......

maybe so but its the only one that I know and they're very friendly and good price to.
we only stopping one night. we'll get there about 5 pm.
last time we set off around 10 am stopped so far 5 or 10 minutes give our bum a rest then we stopped in moffat for 40 minutes and got to the hotel about 4 pm.
took us all in all 5 hrs of steady riding.

There are far more secenic routes to get to Dumbarton than up the M74. Espescially on a bike.
