You can only drain what is in there at the time you open the tap. If you have some pressure in it then close the tap as soon as the water stops coming out

as @Munkul said, every time you run it the compressor pump heats up and as the air goes in to the tank it cools on the inner surface and water condenses out which is why you have the drain valve

If they are used a lot and people don't empty them then it can collect until you can hear the water slopping about inside when you rock them

Opening the end plug just to drain it is overkill

if i open the tap slow the water just keeps coming only a mm or 2 in the bottem of a thimble so not lots now once all the pressure is out i fill again and then there is again a little more water aagin just the 1or 2 mm in the bottem of a thimble

opening the end cap yes extreme but if its just this time before i start using it full time i just want to start as new with no water in there

I've got one that's the same I think. You can get 2 types - one "oil free" and one that takes oil (I had the latter as I felt it'd be better).
Yep the trip is there to protect the motor from being cooked - so with the shaft being seized the inrush of current to try to start it would have popped the trip in no time. Now its freed off, if the bearings are ok you shouldn't have any more probs.

My guess is with the small 50L receiver and the compressor getting pretty warm (and needing to come on more often) is what creates the amount of condensation. I'd have got a larger one but I don't have the space.
The valves on these though are pretty small bore and a bit Mickey Mouse. I bought a couple of better shut-off valves and put those on instead of the originals

yes id guess its the warm air compressed air that causes the water
id like to chage a bit on there to better like the valves but untill its been working for a month or 2 im just going to see if it runs ok before throwing time and money at it
as before ive got a 1 with a bigger tank but its to big thsi one in the pic is about 1/3 to a 1/2 smaller than the bigger one i think

the bigger one is a air master 8/50 where as this is 8/44 i dont know the differance but im assuming not going to be big differance but that little smaller fits in the space neat where as the big one would stick out that much more

it is not just this time, every time you use it there will be some water build up inside. Stop over thinking it, use it and, every now and again empty out the water that has built up

The only way you won't get any water is by NOT using it between drain attempts

It's not ideal, but there's nothing you can do about it really. Water in compressed air is just what happens. Have a look for DIY air drier setups. But you'll still get a build-up of water in the receiver regardless.

very few home users will look for air drier setups and the few that do it will be because they are spray painting or blasting lots

of course, if they are spray painting or blasting lots they will probably be buying a bigger compressor as well

i dont do paint stuff just air tools rarely most of what i use it for is cleaning blowing stuff clean or carbs drying before rebuild

It had nothing to do with the compressor. The only water in the receiver originates from the air which went through the compressor - whatever temperature and pressure it might be operating at. All compressed air receivers will get condensed water vapour formed as the charge cools and will depend on the partial pressure of the water component, at that temperature. Condensation simply means the air in the receiver is basically at 100% saturation.

It is a physical function, unconnected with any particular compressor. Proper draining is important to avoid excessive corrosion and possible failure of the receiver. That is why receivers should be pressure tested periodically - a catastrophic failure at high pressure can be lethal to anyone close by. Check out you-tube for videos of failures and the aftermath of a receiver failure.

That receiver is seemingly from a cheap supplier/importer/manufacturer if the drain point is not at the lowest point, to allow complete clearance of accumulated water when draining down.

Clearly, if the compressed air is being used immediately on being compressed, there will be less condensation within the receiver - it will be carried over to the outlet air-lines - so comparison to other machines, without understanding the modus operandi, is neither practical nor applicable.

As an aside - does anybody blow theirs down at the end of the day ?

Mine (Clarke SE15 now superseded) gets drained when I remember but it's always left pressurised. It's not used a lot but almost never blown down or leaks down to 0psi.

sometimes leave mine plugged in and full after a month it drops enough and cuts in . i wouldn't recommend leaving turned on because a hose bust and it ran on and burnt the motor out

I always leave mine under pressure but turned off. There is enough air in the tank for checking tyres etc without running it. It stays pumped up from one year to the next, just drain the water out occasionally.

never at end of day as im passing and think oh not done for a bit

ops leave mine on all the time only time i ever hear it in the morning as the tank thinks its got low pressure as the temp falls and rises for a few secs
