my neighbor had a grindstone mounted to a washing machine motor, no guards or propper on off switch, that instead unvolved pluggin it in to turn it on or pulling it out to turn it off

Yep, sounds like mine..... I didn't realise we were neighbours!

For your delectation, note I have removed the original Picador grinding wheels (yes they used to sell this as a grinding kit!) and put on the wheels you see here
Built in 1988 using a washing machine motor and whatever was at hand.....

Picador was rubbish BUT thats all there woz......

I should drag my old grinder out and photograph it.
Started with a cheap picador spindle and a washing machine motor.
Ended up with a 3/4hp petrol pump motor and a picador spinde that had
been used in a place with a line shaft.
It was plug and play. Them I got the petrol pump motor and
they have a switch on the motor, it was operated by the lever on
the pump.
It's obviously bolted to the obilgatory bit of plywood.

At the time I could not afford a 'proper' bench grinder. I was given the kit as present and I have kept it as a reminder of how it used to be for me!
I still have the wheels but I don't think I would use them now!

When I was a kid our neighbour did a lot of agri fabrication & repairs had a grinder just like that! I always wanted to build one but when I was old enough I got a Sealey bench grinder instead, I'm still using it now.

Quite a profound statement really. I do think that quite often we get blinded by our collections of tooling and accessories and the ever increasing easy access to same, often deriding others and looking down on lesser kit*. I also believe that this is what sets this place apart from others too, most here have worked hard for what they have and haven't forgotten it.



*I exclude Brad's advert from this as that really is fancifull.

Even growing up in the States, I had to make some thing's out of nothing. Necessity has always been the mother of invention.

I cleared a garage for an elderly couple a couple of years ago that was full of stuff like that, told them i would give it to the local mens shed which made them happy, in reality most was scrapped as it was so awful. But that was often that wartime generation, brought up to make do & mend & never throw owt away.
