Just had some one look at my trailer who wanted to carry a Digger on a £200 fixer upper!
The Dual Purpose exemption for O licence stops at 2040kg unladen weight.
Most twin cab pickups & 4x4's will be over that.
Tacho exemption ends at 100km radius or if carrying other peoples goods ect.
The two lists of exemptions are long & full of conditions.

I had to bin the load bed cover, bed liner, spare wheel and rear bumpers on our Rangers to get below 2040kg, even then it was a bit iffy…

So with a P38 towing a Plant trailer fitted with two 1500KG axels, lets assume the trailer weighs 500KG? so could carry 2.5t?

P38 Curb weight is 2027KG so is it O licence exempt?
This isnt for commercial use its just to shift stuff on for restoring his old workshop, but may shift the occasional bike or machine.
The Series or P38 that would be towing it are not for business use etc

If it is actually personal use then you dont need tacho or O licence.
Is his workshop for a hobby or does he do "work" in there too?
Moving other peoples stuff would be considered business use unless you can prove its not..
Re the kerb weight. Its not what it comes out the factory at but plus any extras fitted that are in use.
It would be easy for yours to be 14kg more than factory spec even with no changes.

The workshop is owned by him but part rented to the business, the business has no assets so any work the trailer does is for him, well it would be me doing it for free!
The Business side would have no use for the trailer anyway.
I think my Kerb weight would be well over with bigger tyres and a fat bloke driving

That just smells of a day in court trying to prove it was not work.
Having no assets does not make any use private.
Moving machines that work uses is work.
Work done for him as a self employed person could easily be seen as work not private.
Work does not have to be paid for for it to be work.
Even vol un paid workers / staff ect need insurance cover.
Having a mate / family help on a job needs employers insurance cover.
Make the set up look like its personal.
No sign writing, no business cover on insurance, vehicle registered in personal name at a personal address etc etc.
Make it look safe so you dont get pulled.

Kerb weight & unladen weight are not the same.
They dont normally include a full tank of fuel or 100kg for a driver.
From memory more like 60-80kg.
Ford say this
Kerb Mass:
Unladen weight (i.e. not carrying a load) of the vehicle, with fluids, 90% fuel, standard and any optional equipment, but excludes load/cargo weight and weight of the driver. Higher series vehicles will be heavier due to higher spec.
The DVSA website says this,
Unladen weight
The unladen weight of any vehicle is the weight of the vehicle when it’s not carrying any passengers, goods or other items.It includes the body and all parts normally used with the vehicle or trailer when it’s used on a road.
It doesn’t include the weight of:
- fuel
- batteries in an electric vehicle - unless it’s a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair
