Got a bit busy today. Couple of pool railings on the go. But need to have child proof catches on the access gates. Scratch head a bit, plus back of envelope. Came up with an idea, roller on the bottom of a slide, that rides up the catch and drops into a recess. But, to lift it out, you have to use a knob that has a spring behind it, so not practical for a child with feeble fingers.. Gates also have to self close, so spring units are also in build. Local places don't seem to have the classic twisted springs??

made a fiat 9090DT tractor start and run better, had to get it running rapidly a while back so we could move it and some other kit around the farm, but it just wasn't right so wanted to spend a bit of time on it. Purged diesel tank, lines, filters changed, filters bled, injectors bled... runs like a champ, all smokey before, wouldn't rev out.... now, starts first crack, revs cleanly, no smoke at all, except a wee bit on start up, but nothing to worry about...happy with that
then removed a nest from the cabin ventilator, blew that all out with airline tested and fine, changed gas struts on rear window to hold it in position, and stop me cracking my head off it every time...
Installed the reversing camera, well finished it today, so I dont knacker my back bending double to see reversing back on to the hitch, piece of cake now...
Rewired the lights so they actually work now, including the flashing beacon, only ones not working are the main beam, I can get full beam but not main, reckon the switch is sticky, needs a blast of contact cleaner... next week.

next jobs, oil change, bought new filter, then found the other two hiding in the back... buggeration, ach well next week for that then, then strip out & change the thermostat, engines just not getting up to temperature, had sat for nearly 5 years, so be jammed open I'd say will change the old perished hoses at the same time...

then....... list is getting shorter, but still a wee bti to go, then she'll be right ready for work....

I’ve one in my van rammed full of offcuts from the saw,every profile of steel bar in a size up to 100mm,including a box of shims 8 thou to 80.

I’ve got a blocked off windowsill in the workshop like that!

A monkey (as it's known amongst sappers) or a post basher, as it's more commonly known. We already had one but it is only 500mm long and has a nasty habit of falling off the top of the post and taking casualties; got me twice, SWMBO once (don't ask what she was doing with a monkey! Oh alright then, we were prepping for a festival in northern Portugal), and it also gave Sapper Mike a good clout as well. Didn't have big enough pipe to extend the old one so I cut up an old acroprop and made a new one 1m long. I particularly enjoyed designing and welding the mitre bevels on the handles. I could have paid a little more attention aligning the handles but hey.

In a previous life I used to get frighteningly angry when things went wrong and I injured myself, to the point where I would pick up anything close at hand and throw it as far as I could, usually accompanied by extremely violent language .

It's cost me a fortune over the years in lost and damaged tools, broken windows when something went the wrong way, and even a a windscreen on my van on one memorable occasion when I got so wound that I threw a breeze block in the wrong direction . Thankfully the march of time has changed all that, but on one occasion I was hammering fence posts in the garden with a post rammer which went astray at the top and fell off hitting me on the noggin.

By the time my ex had appeared, alerted by a loud tirade of horrendous language, I was on my knees in the garden stemming the flow of blood with a bed sheet. "What happened???" says she. "Flippin' post rammer, ghastly thing...." says I, or words to that effect. "What post rammer??" says she looking round the garden and not seeing it. At that time one of the boundaries on our land was a water filled ditch about 25 feet away from the fence I was repairing and when I finally regained a modicum of coherence I put my chest waders on and found the rammer in the ditch, and to this day I still have no memory of how it got there...

I don't know how my ex put up with me as long as she did but when the mists had cleared she would refer to me jokingly as Dr David Banner, at which point I used to say very quietly "Don't make me angry...."

I got the tig kit out. Messed about lining up table to tig the other side on and then some practise putting everything away again before I got soaked

Borrowed garden table to work in shed, bending some 1/4" alu. The rounds were just for bending, not part of it!

Did some cutting and sticking to an exhaust to keep all the silencing effect while shortening it

Shortened as it is just going to be used on my engine test bed that runs them out the car so no need for all the extra length to take to rear of car

The thin exhaust pipe I blew a few holes in but all in all went well

I think you might want to get the exact specification of "child with feeble fingers" you are making those "child proof" catches for . . . I had to seriously up-rate everything that was supposed to be "childproof" when my ex moved in with an 18mth old - if he saw it could be opened, then he would work out a way to open it - and those "feeble fingers" . .. weren't . . .

Today measured around on a Rehm Tig welder which is dead as a dodo.
These machines are really Pita to service because everything is soldered after assembly.
SMPS is dead an so it is necessary to complete dismantle whole device.

I made a simple fence out of two bits of steel.

This runs in the groove on the table:

Tools can be held up against the fence to make sure the end is square to the side. I recently got a chisel second hand and the end was decidedly wonky. Holding against the fence with the table set at an appropriate angle looks like this:

A minute or so with the grinder running and the tip doesn't even feel warm to the touch.

The end is square now (I've only ground it to 240 grit so far, hence all the scratch marks):

For wider tools (wider than about 50 mm), the table can be moved into the upper position to use a different part of the disc:

But essentially a dB killer exhaust
Is a straight exhaust pipe with a resonance chamber instead of the silencer

After 1,5h of dismantling coming down to business.
TOP224 left its cover seals.
So try to find superglue to get it recover.
50/50 chance.

A bit more progress on the slow speed grinder today. I started by making the four pillars that hold the gearbox assembly above the electronics housing. That enabled a quick test fit:

I then put one of the plates on the mill and hogged out a load of metal to allow me to fit the switchgear.

With hindsight, I should have thought about this a bit more (or modelled it in the CAD or something)...

A quick test fit of the electrickery onto the plates:

If was at this point I remembered that the spinning disc hangs down over the bottom panel and hence would hit the potentiometer.

Back onto the mill and I drilled another hole so the pot could be fitted the other way up. I then made a little hole filler out of some aluminium round bar.

It's a bit cosy inside around the front panel, but it's not too bad:

I still haven't modified the table to give a bit more clearance and I need to make a cover before fitting the table. In the meantime, I couldn't resist a little play using the reference surface (which I'd previously adjusted to be level with the grinding disc) with a honing guide to reshape and sharpen an old chisel.

I had a play putting a secondary bevel on (I'm not sure why, I was just experimenting) by putting the honing guide on a steel rule. I should have picked a wider rule as I wobbled off the edge so the secondary bevel is a bit wonky, but it worked and that's the main thing:

The woodwork shop had a bigger version of that at school. Disc was around 40cm and set up like a (old) record player. Post off one corner held the tool clamp which swung to even the wear. Ace for plane blades.
