Defender/Discovery ABS Fault code 4014

Hi folks,

I Know there are a few Landy enthusiasts/nutters on here, so thought worth an ask:

I have not used my ABS/TC equipped 52 plate Defender TD5 since last August. I managed to drive it this week and the 3 amigos came on: ABS/Brake TC warning lights.

I ran my code reader and got:

If I clear the code, the car drives fine and the lights stay out then next time I start the car they are back on.

I tried fitting a new ABS relay and still get the same code.

In 16 years of ownership the ABS has been pretty much fault free, worth doing a powered bleed? or time for a new ABS pump? I am pretty sure the codes/faults will be the same on a Disco 2 which will be more commonly fitted with ABS/TC.

I saw that post and was not sure what he meant by modular - am guessing the complete ABS modulator assembly, they are about £80 to 200 second hand, £300 refurbished or over £1000 new....

unfortunately not - would throw up a code for the specific wheel sensor.

Ah ok. Jumped through hoop after hoop with my Volvo C70 … all sorts of errors with ABS, ice warnings etc etc. Spent loads on diagnostics…. A cheap little sensor and all was, and still is, well.

Aye sensors are cheap I keep a spare front and rear on the shelf.

It's a common issue, I fixed mine on my old Td5 Discovery quite easily if I recall, not an expensive repair. Have a search on D2BC forum. I'll have a look too and see if I can find the post.

Then the abs, traction control and hill descent won't work and it will fail mot if those lights illuminated on dash.

I think the shuttle valve has it's own specific code, certainly does on a Disco 2.

There was/is a common issue on Volvo 850,Classic V70 and C70 where there are dry joints in the controller. What often happens it's fine when it warms up and connection is good, garage diagnoses a failed sensor then it will fail again. Fiddly to take the case apart but once in there is 10mins with a soldering iron. I fixed one of mine and two others with same issue. One was told it was going to £1K to fix, car was only worth a few hundred but had sentimental value.

Non of which you actually need on the road, agree on the mot fail but come mot time my D2 got 2 new inner wings and a half chassis, 3 amigos was the least of my worries

Someone needs to market some reverse logic thing. Lights a few totally unnecessary bulbs then switches them off

Disco 2? Wabco ABS pump?

Will your scan tool modulate the pump? - if it does and you can here it pulse. It will be the seals failing in the pump - there is an upgrade seal kit avail on the internet.

Its a Defender, yes my Hawkeye will run the pump, will give it a try.

My 110 is one of the first year which had the ABS/TC setup, I think you will find that you have a combination of the seals failing as @premmington says and corroded wiring/switches within the pump.

I had a Toyota Yaris which had an ABS failure - split reluctor ring, ABS ECU though the wheel was locking up so kept kicking in and the end result was brakes that were dangerous - extended stopping distance by some margin.
