Uphill Fillets.

It's slowly getting better but still a long way to go...

I've bought some 3mmx25mm and 5mmx25mm flat bar mild. I'm suspecting that the 3.2mm 7018s are too big a rod for this on uphill as the piece gets very hot indeed. Would I be better off with 2.5mm rods on this thickness of steel?

Yes 2.5 is a better electrode to use for that thickness. Although a single pass on the 5mm with a 3.2 would be fine. 3mm for vertical practice is getting on the thin side.

4mm 6013 on 10 mm plate. 200 amps? More or less amps ? Vertical fillet weld.

It's all a bit drippy. Just read this post.

Big old 3 phase welder, with a hand wheel at the front.

I probably need to move up quicker.

Thought the Christmas tree triangle welding thing worked but little success, much fusion and drippy ness.

Use 7018s unless you just want to master vertical up with 6013s

I'm no expert but I will happily tackle a vertical up or overhead with 7018s.
I've tried the same with 6013s and I just make a mess.

It can be done but I'm not the person to offer advice on them.

Smaller electrodes? I will dig out my notes but I think we were taught at college to use a 2.4 electrode on the the root and then 3.2mm for the rest. Maybe a 4mm is putting down too much material at once for you?
