I do love the sprite and midget but always preferred the round wheel arch, i have a 75 plastic bumper rot box stored i would love to build a sebring sprite replica with, The peter may engineering kit looks nice.

I have a spare 1600 one, a spare ECU, the original inlet and exhaust manifolds manifold, a Ford type 9 5spd and 3.9 diff from a Scimitar SS1 that I thought would work well in my new trials car build . . . when for the same money as the bell-housing and starter motor to fit them altogether, I bought a complete MX5 which had a 6spd, a lower first, LSD, and all the electronics to make it work . . .

So if anyone wants a type 9 or a diff . . .

I'm just messing really but it just depends what you're after really.

If it's N/A you want then obviously FI will never cut it.

A std SR20DET on a std t28 will give you north of 250hp with nothing more than a good map and EBC though.

I had one on a .64 housing GT3071 that was almost 400hp (2.5" exhaust was choking it)...that was fun.

Messing indeed - anything more than 150 bhp in a midget on the road is silly.

I had one...a 1500 with factory standard knocking main bearings...brilliant wee car.

Heres mine. 1275 mk3 1967. Felixstow Docks 1973 , roll on roll off ferry terminal. That was quite a good job. Pipelaying, concrete laying, general navvy etc.

I built this Midget on a complete new floorpan made from available individual parts. Only the top bulkhead and transmission tunnel were original items. Faaaaast, but leaky.

Wrt the original post, is it the case that an exhaust is more likely to crack if you try to force the flange flat? I was thinkng that the expansion due to heating in normal service might be worse than the forces imposed during forceful bolting-down. Could it be heated really hot and then have the flange and primary pipes bolted tightly to a thick plate (with better bolts/studs) so it cooled flat?

Thanks Paul, Automotive are my go to for engine machining, I suppose what I'm really after is a Northampton Doubleboost!

Engine is a Suzuki g13b from a 90's swift GTI, I rebuilt as standard, mated with a Suzuki SJ413 transmission to make it RWD(same block pattern). 16v, running the original FI, ECU etc. Not massive numbers at about 100bhp, but a 7.5k redline and I think it suits the car perfectly. All ally engine too, so it's several tonnes lighter than the A series it replaced.

Brought as a complete running car to do an engine swap, but that turned into a project by itself perhaps unsurprisingly. New floorpan, boot floor, sills, rear bulkheads, spring boxes and numerous other parts. In some places there were 4 layers with all of the previous repairs!
Having gone through this I now have a new worry about some MOT exempt death traps driving around.

Hopefully you will be luckier than someone I knew years ago, he transplanted a morris minor engine (I think) into a Honda S800 shell, spent ages doing it, pushed it out of the garage

and found he had 1 forward gear and 4 reverse gears as the engine ran in the opposite direction

I cogitated a K series in my Midget, but I was was not keen on all the chopping up of the body required. Besides I've been there done that with my Mini.
There's a chap on Retro Rides who's done the research & work and now offers a kit to stick a Micra K11 engine into a Midget using the original gearbox and no cutting of the shell, he's also working on using a Jimny gearbox too I believe.
I was considering that too as cost wise it was less than getting my A series rebuilt, but looking around 1.3 K11 engines don't seem that common anymore?

Decided I'll probably just stick with the A series at the end of the day. I only pootle around in the Midget anyway.

There was a am MG Atlantis IIRC available in the early 70s which was a brand new car but fitted with a 1600 Ford cross flow and box . Haven’t seen one for years. I did consider fitting one in my old Midget especially just after one of the fan blades broke , imbedded itself in the top of the crossmember where it promptly bent the remaining blades causing horrendous vibration. Could have been worse it could have flown upwards through the bonnet!

I lost a fan blade off a Morris Minor years ago, it took the drain tap out of the bottom of the rad, dented the bottom hose outlet & cut a slot in the cross member. This happened close to a pub & we got a cork for the bar, bunged it in the hole where the tap should have been. Luckily we had some spanner’s in the boot & took the remains of the blades off & drove home. Turned out the bearings in the waterpump were a bit loose & caused the blades to run out of true.

I was lucky, I was about a mile from home on a dual carriageway doing about the legal limit , managed to roll home with the engine switched off, good thing the ignition switch was dash mounted rather than a steering lock
