I've been lurking around the forum for a while now, reading the posts. There has been some great stuff posted, and while I'm not in the same league as many of you, I thought it was about time for me to add some of the things I have made.

So, here is my first contribution. My labeling system. I print a word document, cut out the labels, and use packaging tape to fix them to tubs.

I like the repurposed video cases. Do you have foam or something to stop things rattling around?

Did my odds n sods ice cream tub storage boxes on the weekend, just makes life easier

They look tidy but wait till they go brittle in about 10 months from oxidization of the plastic when things start cooling down from the forth coming summer .
Best plastic cases I've found so far were the ones that wet wipes used to arrive in ... I still got three minus the hinged lids from when my daughter was born 19 years ago ..use them to store all my shorter drills in as 0-5 , 6-10 and 10 -15 mm sizes , all in half mm sizes & several in each size .

I've also got some rather expensive at the time Stanley clip together drawer trays from B&Q , three big bottom drawers and five upper ones for two stacks purchased as individual items , they are almost 30 years old and the only damage is one drawer front pull a bit of plastic has broken out of it . ( they get emptied & washed in Fairy suds once a year to remove any grit/crud then puffed with talcum powder once they are totally dry to lubricate the plastic drawer runner surfaces .

Best plastic cases I've found so far were the ones that wet wipes used to arrive in ...

I discovered Brompton House cakes/biscuits containers, Asda used to have them at £1 a go - and as a bonus the contents taste pretty good too.

Tricky to source now, Home Bargains are my current suppliers.

Mine are still going strong after 6+ years.
The contents almost match what the label says.
But I know were my tools are.

I don't have any labels for the drawers of filing cabinets or stuff on shelves & I even know where everything is as I've had the system of placing things in set areas going for years & years ( 40 years plus )

With reference to your comment "I like the repurposed video cases. Do you have foam or something to stop things rattling around?" - No. Nothing inside apart from the contents. As they sit on a shelf, there is no real movement. The cutters are all covered in a protective coating. I remove this carefully when I use the cutter, and then slip it back on afterwards.

I use ice cream tubs and plastic bottles. They have been in use for about 6+ years with no ill effects from the hot summers and freezing winters. Anyhow, they are cheap to replace, and the contents taste good too.

What happens then when you put stuff in thats not on the label? Better not to label them just look when you want something. If I had a labeled tub for each different thing Id have no space for anything else!

Welcome - and you really, really need a wee label printer! Perhaps something you could add ask for next birthday or Christmas? They're like something you didn't know you needed until you get one!

(Oh, and I'd suggest one with a QWERTY keyboard rather than an alphabetical one. Don't ask me how I know this...)

Brilliant, great ideas, anything which makes stuff easier to find is a winner in my books.

I hate knowing I have what I need, wandering round the workshop three times, and eventually finding it where I left it, somewhere stupid.

Ah but no, some of them are probably 8 years old and no sign of degradation

They were free, about the right size, not bomb proof but have worked well

Today (last night in the freezing cold actually) I made this - and it's off to its new owner thanks to @ fizzy:-

Ooh, yeah, two inverters, one runs a diesel central heating system, the other the fridge, a 12 v charger for the engine battery, a 24v charger, for the batts running the inverters.

This grey box did the job find for 16 years, inverter / charger, company deemed unreliable hence new installation, the grey box is a 2600 watt 24 volt pure sine wave inverter / charger, I've got one here, in case of power cuts, over 2 grand some years ago.

The solar thing is correct, more of a token gesture.

I've thought about this. It's the cost that's putting me off. Do I spend money on a label maker, or more tools?

Buy the tools so the label maker can be used to label the tools
