A few days ago I got this bundle of Brass pumps and garden sprayers.
All needing some TLC

So with help from @mrsbruce They got some TLC



I welded a 27mm ball bearing onto a metal bar. This allowed me to slide it up the empty body and allow me to dress out the dents.




Opps. Mistake.
This is a new washer, but some one forgot to wash the body out to remove the old oil a crud out.
But it works, but it was annoying.



In the past someone had tried to re seal the old cup washer with "O" rings.
It didn't work.




"O" rings can be used to seal the end caps.
This pair were liberated from a Chubb Fire extinguisher service kit,. They are supplied, but if are that deep in the overall it is cheaper to supply a service exchange unit.




Some pump rods need 2 cup washers.
Again @mrsbruce dies came in useful.




To soften the leather I soak it in warm water.
Even the water is recycled from the tumble drier.




Even the stove is old at least one person on here will recognise it.

Eureka !! I've been driven mad this week trying to stop water dripping over the woodstove ,and it out 3 times but didn't think laterally . Never thought of a plated connection . Mondays job!! Thanks !

Where is the water coming from? Is it rainwater coming down the chimney? The diameter of the hole in the concrete is 8", the diameter of a cast iron stove flue is either 5" or 6". The purpose of the plate bolted into the recess is to finish of the installation nicely with a small gap between the plate and the flue to allow for expansion. In both fireplaces I didn't want to go drilling holes afterwards to fix the plate in place so took this approach instead.

Did you have to have fire kiln concrete for the whole length of the chimney or is it just simple concrete with stones in it?
Found out my 40 yr old bungalow chimney liner is 8 inch (?) id yard long salt glazed waste pipes ..hard as spent uranium & about as heavy .

The slab of concrete is 12" thick with a hole in it for the stove's flue. With regards to the previous fireplace on top of the slab we built a 22" square standard block chimney with standard clay flue liners and filled in between the blocks and the liners with a very dry mix of 7 parts builders sand to 1 part hydraulic lime.

Thought I should give the amazon lcd screen a proper test, I got it over a week ago! Its not the ILI9486 that its listed as but for now its working as a 9481. The chip is well hidden either in the lcd flex or in the glass so I have no idea what it is.
The 3d bouncing cube test gets 170fps, good!

Had another look on amazon found two more sellers in stock. Ordered one from each!

Finally, 2 years after moving my laser engraver out of an old cabinet, I got round to getting rid of the ‘temporary’ cardboard box structure , and making a proper enclosure for it. I only used scrap bits and bobs I had lying about, so most of the build time was working out what scrap of wood could fit where.

Not finished yet, as I’ll need to fill, paint, and 3D print a number of fittings for it. The laser is an A3 size, 5w diode, so I won’t be using it to bounce off satellites to start forest fires in California.

Perhaps I am missing something but I think I need to clarify that the plate bolted to the underside of the slab is for visual \ cosmetic purposes only and is not intended to nor will it stop any water. You need to stop the rainwater from coming down the chimney with a cowl - something similar to the one pictured below.

What do you cast with brass?

Its a chinese one with a 50v 50a power supply from ebay. The original connections are rubbish but once I have that fixed I will do a proper test. The big 135mm dia 5m coil is going to be too long but it is the right size for my SiC/graphite crucible. Others have shown them heating cruicibles but I am not expecting that to work. This really needs an ossiloscope for tuning it.
I have some brass and copper scrap I will try but I doubt it will heat, and 30kg of aluminium to melt.

Anything up to about 6 ounces in a small graphite crucible . Hoping to cast some useable ceramic crucibles in the near future when the final materials arrive from the sellers any day now . Have made several wax forms ( green carving wax ) in silicone moulds but the wax was too hot @ 300 oC and melted the silicone giving me a blob of silicone & wax . Purchased some lower temp wax from China ( blue 180 oC melting ) & some liquid silicone with a catalyst which is supposed to take up to 250 oC before it too melts , it's also supposedly in the post & expected in tomorrow .

What's the reason for the couplings instead of the pipes being crimped on to solid brass terminals .... I have a nice octagonal long arm hexagonal terminal crimping tool that can handle 4 mm to 16 mm tube crimps think I may be able to use that instead if I'm going to make an induction furnace.
When I get to melting my alu & die cast zinc scrap I'll be using a big 80 mm Bullfinch tar burner lance on full bore . Heating the aluminium on some expanded pressed steel sheet so as the it melts it will fall through into a water filled wooden box like rain drops & stay in that shape ..... nice & clean when cold ( hopefully ) .

Then I'll be using my small forge ( or home melter made from a 24 in high ex butane cylinder of reinforced furnace concrete & a home made welded up steel melting pot to turn them back to liquid Alu for casting . If that does not work I've plenty of Plaster of Paris to do a pint sized slip cast of fine porcelain slip to make crucibles and get my wife's pottery making friend to fire them up in her big electric kiln

Found myself sat in an electrical cupboard with this delight.

I often find myself digging through thé drawers, so after 6 odd years i pulled off the protective plastic and 5 minutes and a few stupid spelling mistakes.

Nothing amazing, but made me happy, I'm easily pleased.

I did realise that but I was hoping to avoid nipping up to the chimney until the summer. At 76 I need to pick the perfect day for that kind of fun. I wanted to send the grandson up inside but when I measured him he was just that bit too large. Thanks again for you interest.

I have spinal issues a bust shoulder and an artificial knee joint so I paid my 40yrs younger associate a bottle of brandy , a decent roast beef & yorkshire meal to cap my chimney off .
Letting him use my ladders & supplied sand & cement etc. , mixer and disc cutter to cut two slabs to size , bed in some "U" shaped annealed copper venting tubes and cap off our chimney ...... have to smile at my cleverness when it's really frosty weather , as the humid air in the fully vented column condenses as it passes up the chimney and drips back down the salt glazed flue on to the top of our electric looking like log burner fire top
