Leave the tree whole and tension/pull/winch it over from a high point while digging around the base chopping the roots as you go. Cut the tree up when you are finished.

If you want to kill it & promote rotting Ammonium sulphamate is the stuff to use, drill holes & fill up, repeat a few times thats it.

Works a treat.

Think this is the only place you can get hold of this stuff.
When I originally found it a few years back, I disscovered it had been banned as a root killer by the EU, because it had not been tested on dogs!
The manufacturers refused to do so, and it is now advertised as a Compost Activator!

with poisoning you only need to drill the outer edge near the bark, no benefit sticking it on the hart wood


as @8ob says pull it out, unless its a huge apple it will likely pull out

Anyone tried variations of this method on small trees and hedges? I have used a Hi Lift jack for fence posts but not small trees or hedges.

I knocked up this cantilever for tearing out fence posts, works a treat and pops them out even if there is a ball of concrete at the base. Also doesn't need two Merciuns and a gas guzzling truck

I had a tree in an awkward spot (cherry plum) and had it cur to ground level with some root killing agent to stop it sprouting. Year o so later and it's done the job.

Don't know what they used but sodium metabisulfite is another killing agent which you can also use to precipitate gold from aqua regia...

I have a rake that will grub out stumps, you might struggle a bit passing it over a garden fence though.

Does the toe locate into a notch at the base of the post,must admit I’ve done similar with carver clamps and a steel cleat,like your method bob.

Roundup you buy from garden centres is pretty inactive when it goes in the bottle i reckon.
I used some agricultural stuff in an overgrown garden and it looked like the Somme after a week

i dont buy it i scrounge the stuff from a cropsprayer i do work for not watered down

I once tried to remove a big old tree stump. We dug right under it and used a 40 ton bottle jack. The jack broke - and it was a good quality one not your typical Chinese stuff.

well it wont rot then but sure will kill it

Nick the chain goes around the post and back onto the fulcrum making a choke, its never been beaten. Its about twenty years old now
