Apple Tree Removal

Advice please. I have an old apple tree that needs to come out. My plan is to take the trunk down to soil level which will leave just the stump. Here`s the question,I have been told that you can drill the remaining stump and put into the holes something to kill the stump. What do I use that will work quickly?

Pure roundup or brushwood I’d imagine

roundup is inactive when it touches the soil .it has to be absorbed on foliage in growing plants

Roundup you buy from garden centres is pretty inactive when it goes in the bottle i reckon.
I used some agricultural stuff in an overgrown garden and it looked like the Somme after a week

What about the timber from the trunk and bigger branches..?

Leave the tree whole and tension/pull/winch it over from a high point while digging around the base chopping the roots as you go. Cut the tree up when you are finished.

Stump grinder

In general what you put on the roots prevents regrowth, not aids / speeds decay

I thought if u drill a hole in the middle of the tree a good inch diameter and 3 or 4 inches deep and fill it with pure round up it would sicken the root

Leave it standing. Drill holes in it, one every few inches round the circumference. Fill the holes with round up, the round up will get drawn in and get taken round the whole tree and kill it. It’ll take a while, probably better to do it early spring when things are starting to grow. Forestry company’s used to call it chemical thinning. It was done on sites where opening up a stand of trees in a windy area could heighten the risk of wind blow. Or do it the more fun way as Bob suggested, quicker results

Pleased to have an expert confirm the method we arrived at by 'intuition'.

Removed several trees by tensioning a heavy duty ratchet strap to an adjoining tree and slowly digging around it chopping roots as the tree moved.
As it was a post-war house the ground was full of builder's rubbish so digging was hard. We adopted the hydraulic mining technique I had seen deployed in my first job. Just smaller scale using the pressure washer.

Leave the trunk about 3 foot high, build a bird table on it.

2 Drill a series of 1" holes as deep as you can and fill with Roundup from a Agri Supplier.

3. Burn it out.

4. Hire a stump grinder. Make a lot of Noise and mess.

Exactly Robin, no point in removing mechanical advantage by cutting it all off at ground level. If all I had was a saw and I wanted the whole thing gone its the way I would do it. Worth ringing up any decent bits and waxing/sealing the ends, the turners like it.

Spent a good few hours on the business end of a tirfor and chainsaws (not business end obviously) before and after I left school for a good few years
Miss it but money wasn't great and fell into carpentry

If you want to kill it & promote rotting Ammonium sulphamate is the stuff to use, drill holes & fill up, repeat a few times thats it.

Not advisable for large trees!

Anyone tried variations of this method on small trees and hedges? I have used a Hi Lift jack for fence posts but not small trees or hedges.
