Going to check the plates and weigh the trailer, Had trailers for 30 years and never been pulled but knowing my luck I will get pulled! so best be legal

@winchman I quoted your post but there’s something up with the new software which is messing the quotes up.
Let say it like this, pre 1997 you could tow 3500kg as long as the car was able to. Post 1997 you can tow a maximum weight of either 750kg OR, if the vehicles and trailer MAM plates equate to 3500kg you could do that. So, for example. Your polo has a MAM of 2000kg for example, you could then tow a trailer with a MAM of 1500kg to take you to 3500kg, you could not tow a trailer of 1501kg though on plated weights because that’s over 3500kg.
The figures I’m giving you there obviously also need to account for can your polo actually tow that. Also a polo will have a nose weight of about 75kg. Does that make sense?
If the trailer is over 750kg it needs to be braked as well.

That is completely untrue. If the MAM of his vehicle is 3500kg he can tow up to 750kg additionally. IF the towing vehicle is capable of course.

Licence limits are base on the maximum weight it the vehicle & trailer are plated too.
Yes if the polo was capable.
Sort of BUT the polo prob wont actually be rated to tow a 750kg trailer fully loaded with no brakes.
Un braked is limited to 50% of kerb weight.
If you had trailer for 30 years is safe to assume you have had licence for the same time so have BE unrestricted on it.
Why would you need to weigh empty trailer?
Close but not quite.
Pre 19-01-2013 with a BE either by test or prior rights your trailer plated weight is unlimited not 3500kg.
But over 3500kg plate weight it needs active brakes plus vehicle needs to be capable of real weight.

And how many trailers for a car with overrun breaks are in this country... or cars that are plated for more than 3500kg. Just making matters more confusing.

I've been reading this with interest . I have a home made single axle trailer fitted with a 1800kg suspension axle and a 2000kg hitch. It hasn't got a plate on it. I pull it with either my 4x4 which is able to tow 2800kg or my van which is 2500kg. Should I fit a plate?
