The lower tensioner with the curve , on incorrectly? It looks as if it is forcing the chain away from the sprocket , the chain shouldn’t put any strain on the guide like that, it’s likely to break

If anything the new one draws back further, the plunger moves back about 1cm.does the old one draw back further into body then
On upside down, possibly. Off to check old pics, back in a mo.The lower tensioner with the curve , on incorrectly? It looks as if it is forcing the chain away from the sprocket , the chain shouldn’t put any strain on the guide like that, it’s likely to break

Good suggestion, but the "new" tensioner has actually been on the engine for about 6 months and I didn't have any problem putting it on. With the chain connected the plunger on the tensioner would have to be forced right back into its body, something would break first.I think you are just doing battle with the spring in the tensioner, may be worth drawing it in carefully on longer studs and them swap them back to bolts one at a time.

It would appear to be drawn differantley to the one shown in the photograph.Hang on is it on the wrong side of the chain?
The guides on the right hand head (as you look at it in the photos) go either side of the chain run not both to the right, look at the chain run in the diagram, it pulls right round the sprocket but with the guide where it is it's not wrapped far enough around the sprocket. I can't explain it very well!
