One of my weekend jobs as a lad, was to pick all the nails up and straighten them out for my dad.

my dad saved a 50l tub of pallet nails about 40 years ago - all waiting to be straightened
I used them up by throwing them into batches of concrete as reinforcing.

I was talking to a childhood friend overseas just the other day, and we were reminiscing about the both of us pulling nails from hundreds of boards my Dad use to salvage from demolition jobs. I remember straightening some of the larger spikes by squeezing them in the vise. Even though I had to had to work on some weekends as a kid, they were fun times, and my buddy and I got a fair amount of pocket money for our efforts.

We have a farm, working wasn’t a choice. My dad didn’t pay me, but I had lots of stuff he bought me for helping him. Taught me the value of money, time and who to trust and listen to.

I had grass cutting rounds, and drove tractors at harvest and ploughed the fields afterwards. At the age of 12 (‘77) I was earning £2.50 per hour. It was a huge shock when I received my first proper wage at 15 £33 for 40hrs

Edit: I remember my first proper job working for someone else. It was at a Gas Station (Petrol) and although I new tax would be deducted, I didn't expect to be cheated on my wages. When I went into work my boss said that the 50% deduction was because I was a Trainee. After he left I shut down the pumps closed the Station and went home. Got a call awhile later and I said I quit. The next day I went to return the keys and when he saw me walking across the bridge he angrily came towards me shouting. When he got close I grinned, dangled the keys in front of me then tossed them over the bridge into the flowing LA river. Even though he was bigger and older than me I was ready for a scrap, but he must have thought better.

I don’t think I was earning enough once I started working to pay tax. £1ph was better than some were getting. Had to pay my mum £7.50 a week for digs, fill the tank on the bike, and the rest went on beer

Some brake rollers. Did have a project in mind but not sure now. They owe me nothing so I can strip the bits and weigh the rest and I’ll still be ahead.

Actually acquired a few weeks ago... whilst I'd been getting on 'okay' with the Paton MMA power source and separate wire feed (will be selling both soon) I wanted a fully synergic machine and having done my research there was only one that appealed, and @Tom Orrow L helped make it happen - cheers!

News of the lockdown (and its just got longer for us North of Hadrian's Wall...) meant looking forward to days sat on my backside whilst I try to teach woodwork, metalwork and graphic communication online to kids largely on mobile phones, if at all, but will save monthly outgoings elsewhere and give me more of a need to get off my **** in the late afternoons and evenings and spend some time in the workshop. Did an evening TIG welding course!a couple of years ago, might do the MIG course that runs alongside it when things get a bit more normal.
