I made this, a rusty mess, dug out from behind a leaking core plug in my Essex motor...
I then took all four accessible ones out and dug/washed a load more out, then used a stick magnet to get the rest out. Rust is magnetic, you know.

Reminds me of when the Escort froze up one winter, which core plug did it pop you ask? The one behind the flywheel that was fun changing in the car park of the flats we lived in at the time.
Funny how the gearbox was much heavier going back in than it was coming out, and before you ask I was younger and topped up with water not pre mixed coolant back then, not something I do now, lesson learned.

This bread knife handle was a bit warped due to being put into the dishwasher by the in inlaws.

So I decided to have a bit of a play.

First take to bits.

And use the handle as a template on some burr oak. Both sides come from the same piece sliced down the middle.

Then cut it out and glue to the blade with epoxy. I did consider using brass pins through the handle too, but the holes in the existing blade are not in the ideal position and the steel proved a pig to drill.

Then sand to somewhere close to finished shape with power file and a sanding block.

I'm quite pleased with the outcome so far. It's very comfortable in the hand.

Burr oak can be a bit delicate in places, and there's a couple of chips in it and quite a few small knot holes so the next job is to stabilise it with some more epoxy, this time using thin slow setting casting resin with a bit of a tint. I'll do that later tonight when I'm mixing some more for the chess board.

Giving myself a headache trying to understand CAN, and why its not quite working. The cheap logic analyser I got works well, not bad for 8 quid!

Made a mess washing the under side of the TVR, getting it ready to satin black and flow coat the manky bits before putting it back on the chassis.



Done a bit of 3D printing to tidy up my Milwaukee batts and mounted the chargers on the door to free up some more storage space.

No disrespect to yourself John, but these electrodes seem to be vapourware. Every time I try to buy some - No Stock, we don't sell them etc.etc. I have just settled on 2% lanthanated from Starparts and they are in plentiful supply nearly everywhere so I buy them. Frankly my welding isn't good enough to know the difference.

Cheers but can't claim it was my idea, I recall seeing (soshul meeja I think) someone do it for a MIG torch so thought I'd have a go for both MIG and TIG.

Nah, bought a cheap ring spanner on eBay! Worked well as one end was ideal for MIG, the other for TIG.

You might need to go easy with the TIG one lest any rough treatment damage the cup. You could maybe have the same concept but with a bent open-ended spanner supporting the rubber shaft just below the torch head. This would work no matter what size or style of cup you have on.

Odd, Can high should be the inverse of Can low it is a balanced signal, looks like the wave forms are in the wrong place.
BTW have no experience of automotive can but it is based on 485 control originally developed by Phillips, in the past we did 485 integrating AV systems into HVAC / lighting control, don't see it much these days.

Ran out of time this weekend, but all there is left to do is connect the inlet and exhaust for combustion, connect to the battery and prime the diesel line.



Should be out of harms way under the seat.

Yes, a good point and one I'm mindful of! Do have another one for the TIG torch that I made a year or so ago but your suggestion sounds better. Cheers!

Can you get brass core plugs to stop the decay?

I think you can get them actually, but using properly mixed coolant will stop any rusting. this motor was older than the hills when I got it, and I’ve yet to even run it myself.

Might be worth getting the power washer in through the holes and give it a good blast out while the plugs are out, even a garden hose would do.
It's an awesome looking car

I did use the garden hose on the jet setting, and I also removed the water pump and thermostat housing, to save getting rusty rocks and gunge in my brand new pump and ally radiator.

There are 12 plugs on this motor, but I can only reach four, without a major tear down, so those will be changed and a prayer said for the others....

It may just be my setup. The logic analyser only has a ground reference so it may think that the 2.5v and 3.3v? Of the high line are the same? Did I mention this is giving my a headache? My day job is C# and sql, this low level stuff hurts
The transciever chip has a Vref pin which is supposed to be Vcc/2 =1.8v, but its measuring 0v.

Im using a 3.3v can transciever TI VP230 as my esp32 is 3.3v, and that is the recommended chip, there is a hint that may be a problem. I will order a pack of level converters and a proper 5v CAN chip.

I need to get an ossiloscope!

I just had a play with the induction heater just using a lipo pack.

The current and power will be much higher running on 50v.

Is the analyser a hardware box, or just a s/w package? If the latter, what is needed to run it? Do you have a link?
I need to get into CAN so that I can work on EVs.
