Axes and handles

Hi everyone hope you're all doing well .
So I have two hachets which need new handles .
Now I would like to know how are named in English because I'm pretty amazed about how my way to think about them is changed in seconds .
So "axe" in Italian translate in "ascia" which is not the tool I've always thought would be.
Practically speaking is always something to cut wood but the cutting edge is perpendicular to the handle that is what is supposed to be an axe

that is what we call "scure" which I believe is a forestry axe?

Now after little bit questions about how I should call those in English, please I would like to know the correct name of each one

I need advice about how to make handles for them .
I have an hachet 700 grams with 30cm handle , but it's broken and I need to replace it .
And another One which is roughly 1.2kg maybe 1000g ,same problem .
It appears to be meant for cutting and not for splitting because the blade is narrow and slightly tapered till the eye .
It has a damaged 50 cm handle .

I'm not sure about how to make them ,if use straight handles or shaped ones .
And I would like to add reinforcement near the head of the bigger one like the Stihl ones

An Axe is a big Hatchet........theres another name for them but I cant remember

If you can get access to a copy, the book " Dictionary Of Woodworking Tools " by R.A. Salaman has a great deal of information about axes. There are twenty pages devoted to the many different types of axes and they're uses.

TYA seems to fit a lot of handles , he may be able to help with a step by step guide if he hasn’t already? When ever I’ve fitted a new handle I’ve never been 100% happy with the fit so now use fibreglass handled hammers

A maul is for splitting log rounds and mostly has a sledge hammer one side for hitting wedges and a blade the other to start the split. A Log Grenade is a make of wedge with 4 spiral cutting edges to break logs open, straight wedges work better. I've used Beech for my DIY handle on a hatchet but traditionally they are Hickory like hammers.

I’ll disagree about the wedges. The grenade I have will split a log into four, a straight wedge can’t. Makes the grenade better in my eyes

I've made a few axe handles and for a general purpose axe you want a slight S curve to the handle. I am used to hafting old finnish axes which have a single, long morse like taper, instead of a taper that starts from both sides and narrows in the middle of the axe head, but the basic method is the same. A rasp and spokeshave are the most useful tools. I spray paint the inside of the head and use the paint to get a pattern on the shaft, in order to get the best fit.

It will split a round into 4 but if you knock it into the side of a log and it will just get stuck. We used straight wedges of metal and wood to split trunks length ways.

Ok so
The now I know how are called .
Now I would like to know which handle shape is better .
Unfortunately here where I live looks like they are impossible to get .
I'll to shape a pickaxe handle into an axe one.
I think that I could make a fiskars looking handle fairly easy .
Let's see tomorrow what I can do

Agree , straight wedges are more useful ,I use them also to straighten parts while welding
