Axes and handles

[Screwdriver]

Just applied linseed oil .
Heated the handle with an air gun , and used a brush to apply the oil till it wouldn't take other then rubbed using gloves .
It's becoming pretty nice to see .
Now being not boiled or polymer linseed oil but just natural linseed oil,I don't know when reapply it .
Boiled linseed oil should be applied
Once a day for a week, once a week for a month,once a month for a year ,once a year every year .
Now I've read that linseed oil should cure in 2 weeks?
I don't know how to proceed now

I seem to recall "boiled" linseed oil isn't actually boiled (except perhaps during whatever process is used to refine it in the first place) instead I think it's just regular linseed oil thinned down with white spirit...

Definitely cures faster but should also penetrate better due to the lower viscosity.


<edit> Nope "Boiled linseed oil is a combination of raw linseed oil, stand oil (see above), and metallic oil drying agents (catalysts to accelerate drying)" according to Wiki.

Sounds to me like it's basically finished, you can take it as far as you like though, but I would probably let it dry and then maybe apply a little oil every year or so (honestly though I don't even do that). I do use boiled linseed oil because it cures quicker. Regular linseed oil penetrates deeper however.

It looks dry to me , just after an hour .
I try tomorrow to apply just little bit expecially on the ends ,in particular on the eye so it will expand expand more and secure the handle so it will never come loose alone .
Always if it doesn't split the eye

A well balenced hatchet can be a real pleasure to swing, although I must confess that nowadays my most used axe has no handle at all.

For anyone who makes kindling by hand, a Kindling Cracker is a great way to do it. For anyone who hasn't come across these, you can make one yourself from an old axe head welded "upside down" onto a bit of scrap metal, with a lump hammer being used to whack down the timber.

The frame above the blade is so you only get bruised instead of cleaved open if you were ever to fall on top
