As an aside to the op. The Last batch of self amalgamation tape was a generic Chinese special, worked fine except it seems that mice like it. I patched up the binzel mb36 swivel with it, hadn't used it for a couple of weeks, and the tape was half hanging off... Chewed up, don't know if there's something in the mix that attracts them or what... First time I've seen that. Bear in mind the gun was on the top of the welder not lying on the floor.... Bizarre...

Except the 3M branded tapes that Lidl do from time to time
I have over the years had Gaffa, masking and aluminium tape from Lidl, always branded 3M and always a disappointment, almost as though Lidl get the old stock warehouse clearance from 3M. I shall try to remember not to be taken in again but it is so easy to say to Mrs ZX9, while you are doing the shopping can you get me some xyz from Lidl.

I'll second (probably fifth?) self-emancipating tape, gives a proper waterproof seal (also good when your cable gland is too big for the cable, but...) - only downside is it's prone to persishing under UV light (e.g. outdoors exposed locations) so ideally put a wrap of black PVC tape over the top, Scotch 88 is definitely a good'un. This is/was the BT way for overhead cable splices, what I was taught some decades ago, and what I still stick with.

nah this was definitely teeth marks, not perished hadn't been used in a few weeks, no these were sharp straight lines, well nawed through... we're out in the country, so rodents are a daily event unfortunately..

I don't know how is use in your country but I've been always taught that insulation tape it's meant just to tie cables on the liner to secure them avoiding to lose them inside a tube .
Emergency cases to insulate damaged cables.
Heat shrink tubing and sealant is the way to go to insulate joints (soldered or crimped)
Otherwise nothing if you're using screw type connectors.
Dielectric gel for high humidity or underwater joint (using special boxes )
3M 23 is the only tape I trust to make insulations .
And that's because you have to cut the cables if you want to eliminate the tape .
It will never get loose if correctly used.

That was going to be my point - used for everything except insulating? It's a 'bodge' if its ever seen wrapped round a live conductor, or half a roll dogged round some shonky terminal blocks in a ceiling void.
