I was asked to make a pointer for MIS.

So, I rummaged in the wood pile and found this.



A bit od scrap what naturally look like a pointer.
So I cleaned it up.
The one on the right is going to be used as well, but I was going to have some fun.



Just a show off image showing how shinny and smooth the wood came up.
The finish is a hard wax.

The other pointer had some nice grain, but it was not showing up well.

So.



A flash over.



Both were sanded with a belt6 then a orbital sander. The wax was applied with 0000 wire wool.



Finished.
Now have to wait to take them to the MIS when they re-open.

The idea/plan is to mount it so it points to the MIS location on the name board.

Yesterday I finished fitting some flooring, had been getting issues with a damp smell and thought it was the washing machine, cleaned that out several times over the last month or two along with the pipework, seemed fine for a day or two then back. Eventually found the problem, a water leak behind the units which soaked the laminate floorings under lay stuff and was all mouldy

So new flooring down after a week of letting things dry out.

Today I am in the upstairs bathroom and doing some tiling, I hate that more than laying flooring but sadly I will have that to do shortly as well

To top it all off I got a new battery for the vans laptop, it still isn't working. It runs off the mains with the battery unplugged but if the battery is in it uses up the battery then shuts down. Remove the battery and it will power off the mains but put the battery back in and back to shutting down, looks like mobo may be screwed

Sounds like its not getting enough power. Check power brick is maintaining voltage at its full output current, a cheap 100w resistor will do, V / A = resistor value you'll need.
Its likely a blown capacitor in power brick or on the board.

I think I have it working now, no idea how but whacked the battery in so maybe something loose or bad connection. Battery now at 92%

Not made . fixed. Temporarily at least. Bought a JVC hifi from a closing down sale back in 1989 - for the lest ten years its being getting more and more difficult to play CDs. Some play everytime, some play after a few goes, some just don't - all bought music cds.

Cleaned the pickup a few times over the years, blew dust out . . . finally gave up, and in for a penny, in for a pound . . . tweaked, a random tiny amount, the pot on the side of the laser pickup . . . its played every Cd, every selected track, every time for the last few days

Made exhaust headers for a subaru engine. Need to test fit with the engine back in before fully welding (and ran out of gas). I think I'm slowly getting there with TIG.

The J class were a type of 4-8-2 loco used on the NZ Railway network
Julie Anne was built in 1951 and was preserved in 1967, stored in a museum until 1972.
It then sat on static display until 1994 when it was leased to Mainline steam for restoration to main trunk running condition.
Work began in 2001, and in 2004 JA 1275 returned to the mainline.
1275 was the first in a batch built outside of New Zealand by North British locomotive company and the only British one to survive.

Can you explain what's involved in that, just for my nosiness, please? I've used a laser cleaning disc in the past with some success.

I read about tweaking various pots to get more oomph out of the pick-up as they wear/degrade/age - I couldn't find anything relating to my particular unit, plenty for other JVC stuff - how to set them up, tweak the outputs, replacement etc. I don't have any of the test gear, so after getting more and more irritated by it, I tried a CD and got repeated failure to recognise and play - marked the pot position, tweaked it . . failed . . . tweaked it , it played! And every other CD I've put in it - skips tracks when I want it to - just works

From reading about such things, it may well just be relatively temporary, but for the time being, I'm happy. Everything else works on it two - both tape decks too - even on my tapes from back then. Worthwhile buying decent blank tapes back then I guess - still got quite a few un-used, and likely to remain so now - new car doesn't even have a CD player - USB memory stick things.

Ahh, superb, state of the art machines The first 8 track album I heard was a Neil Sedaka album I believe some of the old albums are worth a few bob these days!
