Anyone know about Land Rover defenders

I’m looking at buying a 2006 Land Rover defender td5, it’s done 140000, 3 owners from new I’ve attached some pictures and the description I’m just wondering what people’s opinion on the price is, it’s currently priced at £12200. Any help welcome

There was a very recent thread that covered Defender buying , Do a quick search and do a lot of reading ,, Im not the man to be asking as a few on here will tell you.

But if thats alloy plates rivited on the outside ,,, run away quickly.

There is a long list of things to look for! Check the numbers match on the chassis and bulkhead (lots of stolen ringers out there).
The chassis along with out riggers rot. The bulkhead under the screen rots. The bottom of the doors and anywhere the aluminium is riveted to steel parts suffer from galvanic corrosion.
I don't know about the engine on the TD5 but the gearbox and transfer box if looked after are sound. The drive chain UJ's etc need checking. Everything is replaceable but it soon adds up!
I love my 90 and would not swap it but it does have a cost associated with ownership!!

Not sure about the pricing but they only seem to be going up, it's only a few years back you pick up ratty TD5 110 double cabs for £4-5K. 90s always fetch good money.

Judging by the interior it's been looked after

sorry , that was the thread title , it ran for a while and would make interesting reading if your new to land rovers , many opinions voiced there , but most of the information would still apply to your question , do no harm to read it all.

I have a 2003 TD5 90 that i have run for the last 15 years.

Biggest issue is rot - that freshly painted rear cross member and is that checker plate along the door bottoms is a warning sign for corrosion.

A regularly serviced later TD5 is a good reliable engine, just change the injector harness regularly to avoid oil seepage to the ECU.

A Defender is a high maintenance vehicle, if you cannot service it yourself they are costly to run. Road tax is dear too on the newer ones.

For the rebuilt components - i would check what has been replaced and with what - if lots of Britpart components I would walk away.

I thought it looked expensive until I looked on Autotrader, that makes price seem quite good.

Read the thread ,,, That looks like the sea in the background in the pic , not a good sign , the alloy is a bad sign , land rover chassis rot from the inside out , its to do with the corner reinforcing braces that are in there trapping condensation along with other things , they sweat and rot , just be very aware of it , yes they can last with very careful maintenance but most dont , and the replacement gets expensive , very quickly.

Britpart parts are a mixed bunch - look on any Landrover forum - some horror stories on quality, just not worth the risk to me if they have fitted a Britpart clutch, half shafts, axle bearings etc.

I like my old Britool socket set - no relation to Britpart, often referred to as sh**part on forums for some reason

My 2003 chassis looked fine, I had it galvanised and it came back full of holes at the rear cross member, it was very thin in places with corrosion from the inside of the chassis, i ended up just buying a new galvanised chassis, that I had not planned on...

I know it gets expensive last year i was rebuilding a 200tdi with a new chassis and but in the end it was mint not mine a friends

Liverpool docks....better for cars as there's no mud. Lived on Wirral all my life with sea on 3 sides and never suffered, more rot risks from rock salt getting thrown on the highways every winter

The rust badly. But my 1993 P38 Range rover has a tiny bit of surface rust on the chassis? same year Land Rover will be rotten
Yes Britparts are very poor but at times you have no option

I see a lot of rot from the roads that run beside strangford lough , its salt water but it gets washed and blown onto the roads and then thrown up onto vehicles , but yep rock salt and mud is a bad combination
