Screwfix do a socket & boxspanner that is made to fit those. Nothing worse than the flappy tappy situation!

This has taken a few days to get together.
But I finished something.
I acquired this very early Seaman's Jack knife. There was some remains of markings, but they have all bean destroyed in it's life and a poor restoration.
The blade and the spike are seized and in the past some one has tried to force the sides open to open the spike up. Not only damaging the wooden sides, but straining the rivets.
Here I am using the vice to close up the loosened rivets. By carefully applying pressure with the jaws the old heads were reformed. The blades were made to open with some oil and heat. The blade slots were filled with off cuts of metal to stop the sides from deforming.
The damage to the wood can be seen.
So 2 pack wood filler was used to re shape the missing part. Mixed in with the saw dust from cleaning the wood up.
Metal cleaned up and a new edge on the blade. The French polish was way to shinny.
So wire wool (0000 grade) and wax was used to dull it down and work the hard wax into the metal.
But I finished something.

Have you tried fitting hands and water in the sink at the same time yet?
Sister has a new house with downstairs loo - I can get one hand under the tap nearly, and nearly mostly over the sink - definitely not two to be able to actually wash them . .

It was seized with rust and a mix of oil, metal dust and sawdust.
The heat allowed me to remove the jaws, the quick adjusting lever and bar.
But the cage and the half nut were well stuck.
Bit for force, 10 tons to shift the fix jaw from the moving jaw.
Burning the crud out to free the last bits.
This shows how well the metal cleaned up

Painted and Gold leaf applied.
Now sat on the bench waiting.

I have one as my "every day" vice on the workbench in no.1 shed.

So, bit more tin bashing today. The plasma cut target changer parts arrived from Fraser and I was really astonished how clean the cuts were, more defined even than the 2mm bits (these are 3mm CRS).
@nickk will recognise the folder, one of the few tools I covet, wish I had room for one, bends 3mm easily. Well okay, "easily" is relative, bit of grunting went on.

So not today but yesterday it's been a "day"
So starting from the morning
I've took apart my Hitachi DH36DAL because my brother broken it
It doesn't work in the chiesel function (straight hammer)
So after little bit of reverse engineering I've discovered that the sliding block/selector has been worn down so it won't catch and lock the final drive gear.
Part 49 in the diagram down here.
All the green parts need to be replaced .
I'm pretty upset because every time I say them to put the selecting knob in the right position where the spring loaded detent will snap in position ...
They always put it between rotary hammer and straight hammer .
Anyway later in the morning I've been working on an alluminium cutting saw .
It has a pneumatic cylinder which moves the the blade forward and backward.
It needs a shock absorber to prevent the blade to hit extremely hard and fast on the alluminium you want to cut (destroying the carbide inserts on the blade )
So it has a two strokes hydraulic cylinder with a bypass between the two chambers and a needle valve to regulate the oil flow/speed of travel.
Disassembled it and took to the local machinist for rebuild.
Yesterday evening I went to our local equivalent of harbour freight with a friend of mine because he would like to buy a woodworking lathe
On the road back to home I've almost found my death.
It started raining ,there was no visibility and my friend drove in the wrong direction ,crashed onto a traffic island,his Pajero jumped for maybe 5 meters and we almost crashed on a police car that was coming in the opposite direction.
Alcohol and drug test , explained that we didn't see the island and the signals because of the heavy rain and the lack of road illumination.
So yesterday it's been a productive and strange day I might say?
Today morning I've managed to collect parts for a concrete mixer , went to the iron monger to buy a drill bit , and around midmorning I've started to work on the plasma cutters board , removed the components and checked them.
Finished this evening .
Found 2 IGBTs and 2 diodes that need to be replaced ,I'll replace them all just to be sure .
And everything else looks fine
It's worth attempting to repair it (1200 euros plasma cutter)
Hopefully it will work again ,and if not I will have an air compressor from it

Drilled out a 1.6mm tig collet and body for 2mm. I bought a pair of 2mm tungstens with the tig but nowhere sells collets and none in the consumable box.
Also measured the collet threads, 9.24mm and 0.8mm pitch. Is this some silly american imperial standard?
