Car shock absorbers, failing after two years?

He's only done two races this year, when I told him I'd just paid 23 euros at his father's old garage for a lightbulb, he photographed it, and said he could have that delivered here in two hours.

He's quiet, he's doing work he'd normally refuse, I'll pay his minions, not an issue, we have a good relation. He knows his muck. Just back from world rally championships in Barcelona.

Two years ago I threw it at a garage, as the front shocks were knocking, I expected the top swivel bits, sorry, don't know the name in English.

You were lucky. I put my e39 into my local garage to investigate a knock at the o/s front when going over bumps. When he put it on his 2 x poster and raised it to check bushes [we both suspected a worn bush/drop link etc,]. Once it was up off the ground enough, this happened...





I hate to think what would have happened if I'd hit a hump-back bridge while 'motoring on'...
And, yes that IS snow....

From paperwork I got with the car, the PO had bought 'Monroe', online, 'cheapest first'. I replaced it with a 20 year old, used OEM part.

I had bikes before cars and was unbelievably miffed not to be able to perform an oil change on my Opel Ascona dampers. A 2mm drill and Mig welder soon had that sorted but EP90 wasn't the wisest choice for replacement damping fluid.

Yep, suspect your right, put cheap shocks on and charged me 870 euros for the pleasure.

I'm going to go talk to the motor racing company tomorrow, give him my V5 equivalent and ask for a quote. Get him to do it all. He knows his muck.

I have to take you to task here - Monroe shocks are, or at leadt were the best aftermarket you could buy. They may have failed and been bought out by now, I don't know, but they really were the ones to go for, and yes they were cheap-ish, but I used them for years, not only never had a failure, their performance was really impressive.

20W Fork oil would have been better and a known quantity instead measuring what came out of each pair and adding a splash for loss. It was an attempt at improving the damping prior to fitting Koni's.

Have a butchers at the original fitment if any are still on there as they might be Sachs or Bilstein, often stamped in plain view on the damper body.
