Used engine can cause cancer. Bits of crap can be in the used oil and knacker the oil pump on the saw. Proper chain oil is sticky and sticks to the chain

Hes just priced up two massive willows to clear fell, id really like to buy another 880 sadly you cant anymore

Nope emmisions killed them of and the 3120, probably be some computer controlled wonder. Great when running but no chance of diy repair.

A friend of mine recently bought one from FR Jones, wasn't on the website but they had them available.
Another tree surgeon I know bought 4 saws when they were running down the old carburettor stocks as he said he'd seen the emission controlled ones knackered in a short space of time.

Thats a shame. Theres a few shown on google for sale but that may just be historic webpages? The yanks call it a Magnum, but not sure if you can still get them? Managed to get a good deal on a clearing saw for a mate from another friend who's a dealer, can't remember the Stihl model, and that had a brain in it!! It learns your throttle habits in the first 50 hours of its life and adjusts the mixture / throttle response to suit or some such......

Ive got 550xp all electronic carb ive been super lucky other guys i know haven't.
I put a piston , a barrel and a new clutch in my old 044 , it will see me out all original parts .
The guy who I get my stuff from tells me the new stuff is all computer based for service and diagnostics, again probably great if the warranty is in date , but then what. Maybe like cars once they are a few years old you just get another and dont think about repairing them .

I really can't understand why they do this. I Know its some bizarre law about emissions but who the hell needed diag for a carb chainsaw?? Its got about 3 moving parts, pre final drive. Its hard not to be cynical and think its a money making scheme.
I read an article in the paper the other day about an engine rebuilder who was closing up after 70 years or sommat. He said that its just not worth it now. A rebuild is more than the equivalent car would be secondhand so that's what people do. Unless its a prestige model then they go to main dealer for warranty anyway to keep resale value up.

Its the way things have gone James, the new saws are lighter and more powerful. I have hundreds of the sodding things and I can guarantee the guys in the mornings will grab all the newer lighter/powerful saws over the older more reliable/heavy ones. None of the nippers can even start an 880 let alone fell a tree with one.

Help needs chainsaw users @8ob et al
hired a poleaw today , well tried it earlier and it would hardly cut balsa wood
No chain oil coming thru and blunter as a blunt thing .
They must think it's ok to send them out as long as the engine runs
So I intend to go to my local Stihl dealer and get a file to sharpen it
Any tips on what size file and or a quick guide to sharpen it please , ?
1/8" file on that if its got 1/4" chain Mikey , looks like its got a long aftermarket bar on it so worth checking the oil holes line up. You can drop the side cover, bar/chain off and run it to observe oil flow to eliminate pump issues.

That was my last saw, absolutely terrible on a hot day. Stop to fill with fuel and it wouldn’t start again.

Perish the thought its run dry, when my computer dies im finding a carb that will fit.
I've got an MS261 which is the direct competitor from Stihl, I've been very impressed with it. It has all the same autotuning and reading the specs/blurb they couldn't be more alike
