to add clarity to that, I didn't come from the south of France only for your kit, I regrouped around half a dozen different pick ups, and had a weeks roadtrip holiday with the eldest daughter, picking it all up, so all in was worth the trip. In reality for your stuff I only came from about 30 minutes away, by the way none of it was junk, and all of it is still in pretty much daily use.....
To keep the workshop ticking over duing quieter times, I buy a lot of repair items of the local version of gumtree. Mostly along the lines of Lawn tractors, strimmers, chainsaws and other small engined kit. I go into it knowing full well what I'm doing and the risks of buying junk. I select only stuff sold for spares / repair, after I've repaired and refurbished I sell a lot too, so know what most of that type of kit is worth, so offer what I think it's worth to me in terms of it's value for spares if it is junk. I hide nothing, explain that in any correspondence, state clearly that this is what I do, and explain why I reckon the value is whatever. Generally not had too many problems, the dreamers say no way etc, ok no loss to me, there's plenty others. There will always be those that reckon their pile of junk is worth a fortune, but when they've been trying to flog it for 6 months and still doesn't shift, they'll eventually figure it out. Personally I just walk away from them, saying that no problem, my offer is still valid if they change their mind.... Had a good few who've called back after a few weeks..... it's not like the market is short of old kit. The stuff I have bought, aye you get the odd pup when they've not been as straight as they should have been, but it matters little to me as I've priced based on it being only good for spares anyawy, but in general I've been fair with them. On the selling side it's the same, you always get the odd dreamer as well... like many have said it's not worth getting excited about it, there's total zeros in every walk of life, just move on...

It wasn't me that was offered that, it was @Tangledfeet . It was a cylinder he bought from me and he then wanted to sell it a while later and I think he may, like you, have stated no swaps etc. It was funny though, not the usual thing you would expect to get offered for an Argon cylinder
Sold that a year or so later after one exchange and went back to BOC; sold it for what I bought it from you for, with some Argon left!

Reading through all this seems to confirm everything I ever thought about Facebook
I am convinced Facebook was created to get all the retards of the world together under one roof , where someone could keep an eye on them.
As for selling , I think you get less idiots if you avoid any platform that is free or cheap - I know Car dealers who use Autotrader rather than facebook/ebay/gumtree etc.
they say it costs more , but less idiots makes it worthwhile

Just could not be bothered dealing with all the idiots...i give away anything less than £50...not worth the hassle.
You could offer 1kg of gold on eBay for £50 and some idiot would try to buy it for £5!
I don't mind offers...asking £250...anything over £175 isn't an insult I think....sometimes I'll sell stuff cheap or give it away if I like the people it's going to.

When I bought my carbon road bike on Sphock last year it was £250. Absolute bargain but the guy was moving to a flat soon so he'd listed it cheap. I could see from the adverts that half a dozen people had made offers and he said he'd had loads of hassle with people making stupid offers of £100 and wanting him to bring it round. I paid the full price and he gave me a free bike helmet. Lovely guy and I've been thrilled with the bike - which regularly sells on ebay for £300 plus.
Also last year, I was working on my Saab on the drive when a guy pulls up and shouts through the window that he would take it off me to help me out, 'Help you clear the drive... make some space'. It looks rough but not 'scrap crap' rough lol. I hate the chancers who make out they are doing you a favour. Cheeky sod. He was very persistent and was quite naked that I wasn't interested.
