Anyone even tried Mig welding a bandsaw blade back together?

Any tips for me? Mine just snapped on me, no big deal, I fitted a spare so could carry on with the job in hand, just got me thinking on the possibility of repairing it, I may have a go at it myself, I've seen the ones I'm using being made/cut to length at the place I bought them years ago.

My bandsaw is a Sealey one, probably the previous version of this one, I did buy replacement blades from them but found them to be rubbish to be honest, the teeth just wore in no time at all, hence why I ended up finding a company that made them to size on the spot. I've moved since then, hope to find another place like that around here.

Tuff Saw are very good blades n the price is right and they post within the UK........
I use that firm for metal and wood blades,,,,

I was thinking the same thing last night - snapped the Lenox blade I'd been using in my Aldi portable bandsaw for the last long time - teeth still sharp, still cutting really well, but I have abused it - got the blade caught, cut with it bending in an S-shape, so its no surprise. But as I was putting it in the bin, I was wondering . . .

Probably snap again after a while due to been mild steel weld and constant flexing

You can do it but carefully anneal it when done as it will be brittle either side of the joint. My Startrite bandsaw has a blade welder built in with annealing facilities but I still re-do it with a propane torch !

I've often tiggged them, some have lasted a few minutes and some a few weeks. As said annealing with a propane torch after welding will increase the chances of it lasting.

I brazed up the last few.

One lasted and is still going, the other one just broke in another place.

Both blades with fine tooth blades, so give it a go.

yep welded a blade up but dont ask @Wozzaaah how long it lasted

yea if i had taken more care and prep it did last for a few cuts and snaped again but will say the blade was old as well so well passed being replaced

i welded it cut 6 bits of thin wood snaped rewelded it @Wozzaaah collected so dont know i did say when posting it it needed a new blade

I had some success with a spot welder. Also silver solder works ok

Braze is better if you xan, well annealed will help

I suppose it depends on where it breaks also

Chains for example I just change them out when they snap, As you just know it will snap elsewhere due to its service life

I know some blades aren't the cheapest, But I would just swap out to be on the safe side personally

It also depends on the blade material. Some are carbon steel all the way through, and some have just the teeth made from a different harder steel

That’s what used to happen, many of the older band saws I’ve used have a cutter and welder built into them so you could get a length of saw blade and make your own up. As said, they had an anneal setting so the joint didn’t become brittle. Also they were joined without filler so you would have better luck if you could tig autogenously and anneal with a small heating torch.

well they were not made in one piece , so give it a go , same as others here , Ive done it , but had some last weeks and some seconds , but worth a go.

you can braze them together no problem. my brother makes all his own up

I've made a cold heat shunt jig of brass & 15 mm aluminium plate to try and tig a 1/4 inch 1.2 mm thick 6 tpi blade ( six in fact , I've got a 100 foot reel of the stuff. ) . All I could manage was blowing the joint apart time & time again then the argon ran out .
So it went on the back burner whilst I've been doing other things.

Have given up for the time being but will try and construct an end to end DC current welder using a 50 AHr lead acid battery and some 10 mm or so dia carbon gouging stick as the current transfer points , just got to sketch & make the clamping arrangemetn and work out how to advance one of the ends so it bulges a tad at th joint to leave the teething arrangement in the right sequence when it is fused & ground flat . To this end I've now got several small sheets of 6 .4 mm SRBP severl usefull lumps of inch thick Delrin , almost a foot square of 3 mm brass plate and one 10mm carbon arc gouging rod .
