You are using a hand drill to drill the ends of round bar?

likely you’re not going in straight. needs doing in a lathe really, would be a 2 minute operation.

It’s square bar, drilled and tapped by hand. I don’t have a lathe, must be the only one on this forum that doesn’t!

How diffivult is it putting the Myford in backgear, isn't it just a pin and a lever or similar?

Nope, open a hinged 'hatch' in the headstock, and fiddle with a cut-down Allen key....

Blimey, I'm spoilt... flip a lever (sometimes need to rock the chuck to get it engaged...) and the helical backgear is in!

You are indeed. Going to try the lathe for tapping on a piece of scrap bar though, just to see, when I get
one of those rare 'spare minutes'

Daft question but you are using a bottom tap to finish and not just the taper tap?

Yes, and I’ve reduced the length of the bolts to 30mm and all seems fine. One started to pick up as I wound it in; made sure the hole was clean, ran the tap through again and it’s OK.

Im not able to imagine a 3 legged gate post so I will wait for the pictures

Second photo is what will be sunk into concrete for the base - post will be bolted and welded to the flat plate
