In my previous house, I was trying for ages to work out what the fishy smell was in the kitchen. It turned out it was a connection in the Bakelite Wylex C.U. getting warm. It smelt like something had died.

an old biddy where I was working said there was a horrible smell in the house . had it for over a year had the drains up floorboards new bog and bath fitted rang the leccy board up as there was a substation next to the house environmental health was a fishy smell just looked up at the batten lampholder in the bathroom and it had a glass shade on and the retaining ring was well burnt brown .il soon sort that new fitting up and job sorted the old bid said are u joking is that what it is . yup see it all the time

Sounds like I was a bit quick off the mark only took me 15 years to upgrade mine...

Proper job - I get funny looks at the wholesalers nowadays when I get trunking and conduit 'nobody uses that anymore!' - Either do it right or walk away
