Seasoned Box wood.

Good for all sorts of handles for tools.
It should turn well.

Something else from the depths of the pickling tank:

A tomahawk? head.
Dug out from under a hedge I pulled out a couple of years ago: potentially buried for 100 years+

It looks handforged to me, and doesn't match up with any (mass produced) axes/hatchets/tomahawks I can find online.

It's far too badly pitted to show any makers marks.

It was buried *deep*:
4 or 5 foot down, under a privet hedge, and well into the clay.
The hedge was 20ft high, and I know for certain has been untrimmed for 40+yes in an inaccessible dead space at the back of next door's garden.

What would you use a hatchet for in a steelworks?
Or were they made for home use? (Chopping kindling?)
I know all these houses originally had coal fired heating and cooking, and plenty of engineering locally, so not inconceivable it's from a hammer: especially looking at the eye

The axes were for home us, In those days (fifty years) everybody needed sticks chopped for the coal fires, I the winter people sitting round the fire with their coats still on, Women with mottled lower legs and veins showing, Looks like Esso road maps

The blacksmiths also forged me a pair of tyre tyre levers about two feet long from 3/4" dia "jumper bar" what ever grade that was, But must be good as I still have them, and they have lots of use in conjunction with my homemade bead breaker,

It was common where my Dad worked for the lads to make pokers, with all sorts of fancy handles.

I believe they may have been carried past 'security' [ ] by slipping them down the legs of their overalls....

I managed to get a Stenor braker late last year, since then no need to change any tires but I want to try it. Could be a long time before I find if its any good.

The mention of pokers got me thinking, Quick look in the loft and here is one I made when I was sixteen, Forty nine years ago, This was the progression from the multi-coloured perspex handle variety, I think I must have been going through a pirate phase!!! Just measured the shaft, Just as I remembered 3/8" welding rod.
P.S. I'll give it a polish tomorrow, and maybe stand it next to the GAS fire,

A decent local Charity shop has now closed, a shame, as it did a good thing for a good cause.
My Friend Missy, who is now in the process of shutting up shop and disposing of items. They even have a Red Phone box.

She dropped by last night, we kept up the 6 feet distancing, easy if you think about it.

This is what she left me.



She thought this lot was old and I would like them, as I often had old things from her.



A thing, I know what they are. More fun with these later.



2 Dunlop tyres levers, they were found in a tool box left outside.




Another tool they were not allowed to sell, donate or even accept if they see them in the pile of donated items.





Dead Bench grinder, again the shop was not allowed to sell it. As they could not test it officially.
