Irrational Tool Desires

I've bought my engine driven in may 2018 for 350 euros ,I never really used it , just restored and put something together , testing 3 phase stuff etc but I never got my money back
I will probably probably need it for a job once Coronavirus Emergency Will End
But it actually used as dust collector

For me it's all about being able to fix/repair something when that time arises,.....if you ain't got a certain tool to do a particular job, you are pretty much stuck.

Unless of course you have the tools to make the tool you don't have!

I am now in need of tools for work and home with my new job, it is getting old very quickly bringing stuff home at weekends so I am slowly replacing tools regularly used at work. On a whim I visited the Snap-On man last week and ordered the matching deep sockets I fancied to my other 20 year old extravagant purchase of 3/8" drive Metric & A/F sockets.

Just seen this thread and have 5 more pages to read through! I'd quite like a Scannning Electron Microscope, and a decent optical microscope. Many hours were wasted looking at stuff when I worked at Nimbus diamond R&D.

I don't think there is anything irrational about buying tools.

However I do suffer from a compulsive fixation on buying sets. If I have bought one, I must have all the rest of the sizes/types in the series to ensure I have the full set of tools so I am fully prepared and equipped for the task which I will likely never encounter again.

Also if I have one, and I like it, I must also buy another, to have a spare - just in case I wear it out for the half dozen times it gets used in the next 20 years.

I’m pretty sure psychologists would have a field day with most tool addicts.

Boy, you realy need some help... Bit like the rest of us addicts. Class A dope is nothing compared with tool addiction. Except.. one is at least compos mentis to enjoy the tools.

What about irrational hoarding of stock? Ive bought several lumps of that I have no immediate use or project for, and stuff for a project I buy quite a bit more just in case

No point in having a lathe,mill or welder if you have no stock. Its when the machines get buried by the stock you need to worry

Something like cutting/grinding/flap wheels , various greases and oils , electrical tapes/connectors,zip ties, electrodes etc
The more you have in storage the better

That's so true, 99% of my metal stock I've either found on the road or it's came from busted/thrown out items. Metal frames from an old bed or table, casings from video recorders, all stuff my wife would have just let go. Apart from the cost and hassle of finding a metal supplier/waiting for delivery, I'm recycling and fixing things straight away.
