The name Greenland comes from Scandinavian settlers.

In the Norse times, it is said that Erik the Red was exiled from Iceland for murder.

He set out in ships to find land rumoured to be to the northwest.
After settling there, he named the land Grfnland (Greenland), possibly to attract more people to settle there and start a new colony.

That could set out and raid Iceland, Ireland, and the Northern reaches of Norway.

And also reached America, quite a few years ahead of Columbus.

Yesterday I aquired a nice new Optrel Crystal 2.
All Hoods fault
Not used it yet. Can't wait.
I was considering a cheaper option but a few people have had reliability problems with some of the others. My old Optrel lasted 18 years so can't complain.
It was on sale at Inverter Fusion. Fast delivery and very helpful.
£305 plus vat.

So the taper turning can run it's full length

And to mount other stuff - on my C13 I have the collet box and its stalk mounted there, and the oil tank as mine's a later pumped-oil version. I *think* the rarer than hen's teeth profiling / tracer attachments mount there as well, probably a few other even rarer accessories, Holbrook nade some interesting hardware long before most of the other makers.

You must be hard on your gear Brad. I’ve dropped my Satellite 10m plus from cherry pickers and apart from the odd scuff, no damage whatsoever.

I will try not to!
I don't know if there is a problem with it but managed to blind myself several times last night testing it with my high powered LED torch. Sometimes it would darken but othertimes not.

You do TIG welding mostly at a bench or in a workshop I’m guessing.

I’m not hard on my gear, my two Speedglas 9100s are 3 & 4 years old.

I just do actual proper welding work. Which like it or not, an optrel is not up to.

We have, and I don't call 10m up in a cherry picker, benchwork! They get used where needed, be that with my head trapped in a spaceframe or hanging off a ladder

I’ve 3 Optrel lids, they all share the same components bar the Screen, and probably they are all the same bar the brains.

I use to put the welding helmet in the shelf only once I finished working
For this reason it has a lot of scratches caused by miss measurements
Making it simple , welding helmet up and me trying sticking my head somewhere

Yes it's a nice bit of kit. Will definitely have to do something about the colour. Not sure on its original but it will definitely get changed

The belt fitted [it's not as bad as it looks in the pic, I suspect it's been used for wood-bothering and that's why it looks knackered] and the spare are 60 grit - the red ones [ no idea what they're called ]. Would there be any advantage in getting zirconia ones like these and/or of a different grade i.e do they perform significantly better? I'll be mostly using it for metal and the [very] occasional lump of wood.

Zirconium belts are head and shoulder above aluminium oxide. I’d price up ceramic as well, might be a little pricey, but hold an edge even better than zirc

Tis a good book. I have a few of the Ladybird Adult books. Read the front and back leafs, a bit of hidden humour there as well.

I’ve got one of these (Clarke branded). Don’t be too enthusiastic with its use, they eat material.

Currently I’m on a 120 grit belt, well worn and probably past it’s best. It bevelled the edge on the marking knifes I made a few weeks ago
