Yes but since that was 100 years ago, one assumes we will be in a similar position with EV plug points 100 years from now.
Gonna have to bump up the National Grid a fair bit too. Double the capacity??

They are out there if you look,
Petrol cars 30% efficient, much less if you include the oil production and transport,
Diesel cars 40% efficient, much less if you include oil production and transport,
Hydrogen cars 60% efficient, much less if you include hydrogen production, using current methods or the splitting of water,
Electric cars 80% efficient, much less if you include electric production and transport
The EV though is still more efficient overall than all the rest, even if the electricity is produced using coal,
If you want the greenest transport, buy a push bike.

I think the best way to tackle this particular problem is to have a massive Government sponsored drive to fit solar panels to every house in the uk. We did have a half hearted effort which started out being a scam then I assume got killed off by the energy companies and oil producers who wouldn't have been happy about people syphoning off their profits.

Assume all you like, but the fact is that the modern world moves much faster than it did 100 years ago, but it’s still not able to do it instantly,
But there are already millions of EV points already out there, called domestic power sockets,
There maybe a lacking of fast charging points, but that’s already changing, with the oil companies putting fast charging points in petrol stations, and that will accelerate as more EVs are sold and less vehicles require oil based fuel, because it makes business sense.
My point still stands, things won’t stay as they are changes will happen.

I think there's also an advantage in terms of compatibility. It's so much easier to make an EV compatible and even complimentary to renewables. I'm sure it's possible to create synthetic/green/biofuels for ICE vehicles but not for the ordinary householder. 220v AC though is relatively straightforward and actually, cheap.
But does the world really need the sort of massive glitzy neon lighting that we see glowing all night long? Someone is milking the last advertising minute out of it, while others are campaigning to have the stand-by facility banned from TV’s to save a few fractions of a watt of electric.
And office blocks in big cities, empty, but every light still on all night long, to look pretty?
The wastage is horrendous, but accepted.
The advertising signs don't use much leccy on the scheme of things.
The waste that goes on elsewhere is a different matter. The civil service are great at leaving all the lights on - they don't pay the bills.
Most people over heat their homes.
Hotels are always too hot. As are most shops - cinemas and restaurants.
I blame women for global warming - they threaten a walkout if the temperature drops below 22C - despite the fact normal room temp always used to be 20C.
It takes 5 minutes to fill a car with petrol and pay. How long to charge an electric car? A typical petrol station has say 24 pumps. You would need 300 charges for each petrol station

the only way to do it and Iv said it before is every car has a standard size and location of battery and you drive in, a machine takes the battery from under your car and installs another one
just like we did when we were kids with remote control cars

Not sure that's needed, the cost of solar is already cheap enough to be competitive. Better to increase tax on fossil fuels - in particular heating oil/gas, on the proviso that all funds are spent on insulating homes. (Probably too simplistic though!)
The old FiTs were an ok idea in principle and they did get a fair bit of kit out there but they now look a bit like free money to those who could afford the investment and could get a decent grid connection.

Maybe on a downwards trend compared to the massive spikes of the last 200 years, but still growing at a phenomenal rate. And predicted to carry on hurling upwards for a long time to come.
When I moved to the Philippines in 1993 the population was officially 73,000,000. When I eventually left the place for good, in 2017, it was approx 105,000,000. That’s damn near 50% growth in less than 30 years. Totally unsustainable, though family size has apparently dropped from 8 to about 6.5 or somewhere around there.
ETA. Look at Nigeria, estimated to more than double over 30 years.

If electric car technology progresses as fast as mobile phones battery tech did..... we’ll all be whirring around in Dysons in a decade.
Is solar that cheap?
Remember gas generators get paid 4p per kw/h. Any more than that is a subsidy.
Spain and Portugal have almost no solar pv. They get far more sun than us.

Folk keep taking about the grid, but most don’t realise we pull 24% less elecy from the grid today than we did in 2005. In 2018 we used the lowest amount since 1994. The grid infrastructure is more than capable of taking any EV spike in the next decade.
Also people who act like the charging an EV thing is some issue still needing solved, are you aware these full EV’s have been about for several years now and people having been living their lives fine with the charging situation?
Taking delivery of my new EV on 6th of March. Don’t know how I will manage with all of the issues pointed out by the diesel nuts on this thread.

Same tech as the ones used in cars.
My Phillishave is 20 yrs old. Uses nicads. Still gives me 2 months shaving every day. My brothers lithium ion one lasts half the time and he doesn't shave as much as me!

I remember the mobile phones of 30 years ago, as big as a house brick..heavy.... 8 hour battery life, ages to charge..just made phone calls... whereas modern phones, 6mm thick, weigh nothing, some have induction charging, (charge for free in MacDonalds) and mine will stay charged for a week if I leave wifi turned off.
And it takes pics, videos, navigation etc etc.
If leccy cars progress that fast....

I want to see what happens when we get one of those frequent motorway closures, with electric cars sat for hours, in winter, electric heaters on.....lights on.....then the road is cleared..... and we have 300 flat batteries....
Have you seen how big the batteries actually are.....

Just more rampant consumerism, the next thing they want / force you to buy in the name of saving the planet. Any halfwit with one brain cell should be able to work out that jamming a load of batteries and an electric motor in to a "SUV" aint gonna make a blind bit of difference? A 2-3ton vehicle, thought these designers would be taught about power/weight ratio on their first day ...........and that electric dont grow on trees..................oh wait a minute it does
