Roundheads are much better machines, assuming of course the bed is not knackered. The 2000's have some advantages but the frickin' headstock is not one of them unless you have a perversion for earplugs

Thats what Colchester should have done straight off the production line, right out the back door at the loading dock, a line of skips

He does and like me he suffers. Or at least I used to until I bypassed the headstock gears and fitted a direct to spindle servo motor

I dont like it but tbh heavy turning without tailstock puts more strain on it than a tidly triumph weight.great putting all that strain on the headstock and bearings
As horrible as it looks Id rather that method than a bent leadscrew

I love mine - it's really smooth and quiet. No wear either.
I bought it off a retired toolmaker - it was his machine in work and then he took it home when he retired so very well looked after.
I also had my Elliott shaper and Elliot Sturdimill off him so hopefully they will be just as good.

I have never seen a good one. There was about half a dozen in the tech i attended, and they were worn out even though they never did much real work. They were replaced with TOS lathes and even after 10 years, they looked and ran like new, a much better machine.

The square heads Fizzy. The only good thing i have to say about mine is its a lathe, where as previously i didn't have one, apart from at work. What i don't know about the square heads though, is were they badly designed or badly made ? I think its badly made, as i did use a Japanese copy of the square head and it was an excellent machine.

That's exactly how They unloaded Mine. Went into the house for a minute, came out and Mine was flying about 6 foot off the ground. When I could talk I asked Them why did They do it that way. Said that's how They been doing it for 30 years. Told Me the strain from lifting was less than the strain from a heavy cut. Can't see putting 1250 pounds of cut (1/2 of the lathe) on a tool bit or drill bit.

I personally think its disgusting putting a toss chuck on a colchester. There is good and bad in most lathes. I like the really early colchester. Cone head style. One thing I can say about colchester lathes is that they are a right ballache to take apart.
