My offcuts shelf is all painted an bolted to the wall. I do a lot of odd little bits of fabrication so having a bunch of small pieces of material hanging about is always handy.

Doing some work on the old Kubota tractor and one of the issues I have lived with for years is that the fuel tap on the filter housing had snapped inside the housing.

Took it apart and basically it is a alloy bit with a peg that turns a plastic bit. Plastic bit had seized in housing, cue alloy bit shearing off and disappearing someweher years ago.


Of course replacement parts are made of the famous unobtanium so what to do.......

Decided to go for a mechanical fixing as couldn't see glue of any type holding so go a 5mm bolt and turned the head down on the lathe.


Then drilled the plastic part to 5mm and then used a 6mm drill to create a recess for the bolt head.




Tapped the alloy tap out and bolted together.


Works really well so far

Also enjoying having an organised and tidy machine shop again so when I need to do something like this I can just switch the lathe on, drop a tool in and away you go. Only took a couple of mins to turn down the bolt and maybe 15 mins to make the whole assembly - now thats why I invested a fortune in all these machine tools

I got this from a friend.
Modeen Lady Ann. With twin cylinder steam engine.

But.


The wood has dried out. So, I floated her in the bath for a few days. making sure if she did take on too much she would settle, but not go down.
This allowed the wood to swell and seal. Took 8 days.




So, over the last weekend, I:
Replaced all the seals on the engine, boiler and Meths. Tank.
New wicks in the burners.
The hull was waxed as well.
The Boiler was de-scaled as well.



She was filled and fired. Took about 5 minutes to raise steam.
The engine is a bit clunky, but it did smooth out.



Tonight I fired her again, a lot better.

One happy TYA.
I am going to source new RC gear next.

Today 8th driving lesson ,drove around the driving school , visited the other cities ,drove to the highway to my city and drove home
The instructor said that I drove much better on known roads , I think because I know how roads work around home

yeah - seems to be a bit of an Ark thing going on at the moment, I have orders (from various people) for 2 dogs, a cat, 2 scorpions and a spider :-)

I attempted to make self propelling steam boat once may be when I was 13
Essentially a little wax candle heating a copper coil
Water will be pull into the coil cause of vacuum force then once heated (very quickly) it will be shot out the coil as steam and the cycle will repeat until the coil (spiral tubing) is enough hot to make steam

I think to remember they're called pot pot Steam boats

Water will be pull into the coil cause of vacuum force then once heated (very quickly) it will be shot out the coil as steam and the cycle will repeat until the coil (spiral tubing) is enough hot to make steam

I started trying out the suggestions from @barking mat & @The_Yellow_Ardvark for freeing off my Daimler pistons. There’s diesel, engine oil & paraffin in the left and full fat Coke on the right.
I doubt the map torch will have enough heat to do much but we’ll see.

Will it fit in your oven? Obviously when SWMBO is out. Then give it a clean in the dishwasher...

You could have a go at the "hot cold" method but the cold has to happen quickly.
Get a makeshift BBQ going at ground level - big enough to sit the block in, let it cook for for a while. When the block is hot, tip it out of the BBQ upside down so one bank of cylinders is vertical, then drop a couple of tablespoons worth of dry ice pellets on to the undersides of the pistons. Give it about a minute for the pistons to cool then tip the block right way up and quickly give each of the pistons a whack (wood block, big hammer). Repeat for the second bank.
Only downside is the dry ice will cost you about £25 unless you know someone to "borrow" from
