Not to defend smart meters but I reckon you wouldn't be happy if your 30 plus year old meter was over charging you?

It's also possible it been undercharging you given it's a mechanical device.

All I can see is a sneak prime time price hike + increased load shedding ability, non of this is in the end users favour!
Edit: smart meters do not continuously report back to base, they send your daily usage back once a day, no info on how or when the energy was used
Thsi has some interesting info.

There are some things which are at odds with each other. It does confirm the once a day report back but also says it can be done every half an hour. It also mentions the government allows them to take one meter reading a month to calculate bills so you must have to opt in to them collecting every day.
I'm not going to reply again as it will just wind me up
Smart meters are not the root of all evil, they will not suddenly put peak prices up or monitor what you use so they can work out how to charge us more
As for remote disconnection, it still needs a court order which is a long process and only used for those seriously in debt or fiddling, then they still fit a pre payment meter with credit on it!
As far as I know it's not even used as there is a risk of turning something off like a ventilator or oxygen generator so it's still done by someone in person who has many many rules to follow, often the meter is only swapped if it has been tampered and is dangerous
How do I know this? For 2 years I fitted smart meters, and a large portion of my work was warrant work, changing meters of those people who were on the fiddle

If we got rid of the fridge and freezer we would save over 80%
