I don’t have a spare year to read all in the links, but it still begs the question, why do we need smart meters? Apart from being ordered to by the military junta in Brussels.

They couldn’t send that same info to normal meter users? Or is there some special communications system built into the smart ones? Again, it just sounds like bribery to change to smart meters.

I got a phone call the other nite some energy company wanting me to change and fit the smart meter and save me money .I just said no thanks how the hell can the meter save me money 
he waffled on so I said unless your kwh rate is less than im paying it saves jack sh ..t 
just puts the meter reader out of a job saves you money and you can check every minute of the day on my energy consumption and we all know what that that can lead to 
I had one fitted when I had my silly head on . was on painkillers at the time and clouded my judgment . its a waste of time as we changed suppliers so it don't work anyhow its not universal and I certainly wont let them change it to one that does. smother them with tinfoil and they wont transmit

its not brussels its uk parliment The UK’s smart meter scheme was introduced by Labour leader Ed Miliband, when he was energy and climate change secretary. The last government had a habit of chucking big technology schemes at problems; the difference is that this one made it off the drawing board – unlike a 2006 brainwave from Ed’s brother David for carbon rationing
is our energy suplies uk based yes or no ? the answer is no so from the eu directive its better to have a digital system in place not a meter reader
does the consumer benefit from the smart metter fitted nope unless you factor in the energy suplier refusing to supply lower tarriffs unless you fit a smart meter
can the energy supplier cut you off at times of crisis yes to supply big companys or to supply the rich with quote system is not coping with the energy needed to maintain the system
Utilities want to deploy smart meters because the technology will simplify the process of collecting meter reading and controlling supply at times of high demand. The kit also makes it easier to switch subscribers to higher tariffs in cases where they fail to pay their bill on time.

theres really no benefit to the customer its all business based

Power companies currently need a warrant to install pre-payment meters against customers' wishes because they need access to their property.

what it can do though
Smart Meters typically send bursts of data, lasting a fraction of a second, at intervals of minutes or hours. Lots of different figures are quoted for the overall fraction of time Smart Meters transmit for - the duty cycle - and this is partly because meters are used in different ways by different utilities.
ive had to look this up you can be cut off using a smart meter unless your on soemthing like this
As far as I know it's not even used as there is a risk of turning something off like a ventilator or oxygen generator so it's still done by someone in person who has many many rules to follow, often the meter is only swapped if it has been tampered and is dangerous

smart meters have 3 sets of contacts inside if anything is dismantled it triggers alarm including loss of power to it

They could get that same info, anyone can, tomorrows electricity profile is published every day. But because a "dumb" meter can't report your half hourly usage back to the supplier, you can't be billed flexibly.
If you've got the tech to make the most of it and don't need to run much between 4-7pm, it makes sense.

a water meter is good if you live in a high rateable aeria and hardly use any water. not so good if theres a few of you and u use plenty

yea i agree..my daughter lives in a flat on her own and working all day a water meter works for her.. But anyone who washes cars,likes to hose around the house etc will pay a lot more metered.

My water rates were based on the rateable value, and came in at £680 per year, a meter has reduced that to £28 per month, we are not particularly frugal with water either.

Mine are £991 and the water i use it would be another few hundred on top with a meter...i have a couple of friends in the same area and roughly same usage and they hate the meter..until a solution was found

Thousands of households were paid to use extra renewable electricity over the weekend as windfarms generated unprecedented levels of clean power.
Homes using a new type of smart-energy tariff were urged to plug in their electric vehicles overnight and set their dishwasher on a timer to take advantage of the record renewables in the early hours of the morning.
The blustery weather helped windfarms generate almost 45% of the UK’s electricity on Sunday, setting a record of more than 16GW that evening. At times there was more wind power than the UK needed.
Duncan Burt, the boss of National Grid’s electricity system operator business, thanked households for helping to balance the energy grid by “getting paid to use more energy on a windy night”.
In the past, only energy-intensive companies would be able to claim a fee for helping to balance the system by making use of the extra electricity. However, homes using smart-meter tariffs can lay claim to a renewables windfall too.
This cannot be an accurate reflection of the grid. It rarely drops below 30 Gwatt demand, nuclear is about 6 Gwatt and runs at full available output at all times. The remainder is dispatchable power, i.e plants that can modulate to balance demand and supply. There are times where there is too much local wind due generally by Scotland having built too many wind farms for the grid transmission capacity. Those wind farms that are asked to curtail generation because of grid limitation are paid more for doing so than if they contributed to the grid.
So asking consumers to increase demand will only cause the dispatchable plants to increase output. It makes no sense whatsoever to reduce consumers costs in this situation? We never have an excess of renewable generation in the U.K. except for where transmission capacity is likley to be exceeded, this is due to poor planning and just adds to our already inflated electricity unit cost.

Curious how they ‘urged’ them to, or ‘paid’ them to.
Do they email them, call them, or does the meter gadget display a ‘use loads of electric tonight’ moving banner?And I think I asked this already, why only smart meter customers?
Electricity suppliers know when their customer base is using most electricity, when peak times are, they don’t need individual real time consumer consumption figures to work that out.

Electricity suppliers know when their customer base is using most electricity, when peak times are, they don’t need individual real time consumer consumption figures to work that out.
Once upon a time they would look to see what was on TV, such as big sports event, dallas. And gearup for the kettles going on in the adverts. I don't think those surges happen these days.
Not sure what they use now.
